Sputnik trawler is a nickname given to two classes of series-built side trawlers. In the mid to late 1950s & early 1960s these new & revolutionary boats were intended to replace ageing steam trawlers. The little workhorses had to combat the inevitable prejudice against something ground-breaking & also the torrid economic state of the trawling industry in the 1960s. Inevitably there were casualties. However removed from their intended role as mini-side trawlers based at the main trawling ports the sputniks began to turn in some fine performances for skippers belonging to the inshore ports. Sputniks became successful seine netters pelagic trawlers & scallop dredgers their performance often enhanced in later years by extensive rebuilding which left fifteen-year-old vessels looking like brand new boats. Against the odds of the 1960s trawling depression some of the sputniks even did well as side trawlers & spawned the larger Spinningdale trawlers. The Spinningdales proved an exceptional success as side trawlers & their design was every bit as capable of being adapted to other forms of fishing as the sputniks. Some of the Spinningdales were built as outstandingly successful seiner/trawlers for inshore fishing where they were later joined by many sister vessels following the demise of the trawling industry. This book is a memorial to the sputniks & Spinningdales with brief histories & photographs & some fine fishermens anecdotes about the multitude of things these boats did during some of the best years the fishing industry will ever know. ...

Dorothy OGrady is uniquely placed in the annals of espionage. She was the first Briton condemned to death under the Treachery Act of 1940 after she was frequently spotted on the outskirts of Sandown (a prohibited area on the Isle of Wight) insisting time & again that her dog had strayed. Had her appeal not saved her from the gallows she would have been the only woman of any nationality to suffer death under the Act during the Second World War
- indeed the only woman to be executed in Britain for spying in the 20th century. Yet the full story of her extraordinary brush with notoriety & its enduring legacy has never been told despite the fact that it has more than once dominated the front pages of the British press & inspired both a BBC radio drama & a novel. Now with the benefit of access to previously classified documents the truth underpinning the OGrady legend can finally be revealed. Following her appeal she served nine years in prison for her wartime crimes
- but was she really a spy in the employ of Germany? Or was OGrady as she insisted years later a self-seeking tease who committed her apparent treachery for a giggle? Or was there some other motivation which drove her to wartime infamy in a case which reverberated around the world? In The Spy Beside the Sea author & journalist Adrian Searle examines all the evidence to reach a disturbing conclusion.
