This second Naval Aces of World War 1" book looks at the many flying naval heroes who served alongside or against those of the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS). While the RNAS operated its own formidable arsenal of Nieuport & Sopwith scouts over the Flanders coast the German Navy countered with its own Land Feld Jagdstaffeln & Seefront Staffeln. Unique to World War 1 was the use of flying boats as fighters in combat which figured at least partially in the scores of Russian aces Aleksandr de Seversky & Mikhail Safanov. The best flying boat fighter however was Italys Macchi M 5 flown by three aces & also the mount of Charles H Hammann the first American to earn the Medal of Honor in aerial combat. Also unique were the sole US Navy ace David Ingalls who scored his six victories while attached to No 213 Sqn RAF & Greek ace Artitides Moraitinis credited with nine victories over Salonika & the Dardanelles." ...

The battle for Guadalcanal that lasted from August 1942 to February 1943 was the first major American counter offensive against the Japanese in the Pacific. The battle of Savo Island on the night of 9 August 1942 saw the Japanese inflict a sever defeat on the Allied force driving them away from Guadalcanal & leaving the just-landed marines in a perilously exposed position. This was the start of a series of night battles that culminated in the First & Second battles of Guadalcanal fought on the nights of 13 & 15 November. One further major naval action followed the battle of Tassafaronga on 30 November 1942 when the US Navy once again suffered a severe defeat but this time it was too late to alter the course of the battle as the Japanese evacuated Guadalcanal in early February 1943. This title will detail the contrasting fortunes experienced by both sides over the intense course of naval battles around the island throughout the second half of 1942 that did so much to turn the tide in the Pacific. ...

Nausea

Jean-Paul Sartre's first published novel Nausea" is both an extended essay on existentialist ideals and a profound fictional exploration of a man struggling to restore a sense of meaning to his life. This "Penguin Modern Classics" edition is translated from the French by Robert Baldick with an introduction by James Wood. "Nausea" is both the story of the troubled life of an introspective historian Antoine Roquentin and an exposition of one of the most influential and significant philosophical attitudes of modern times - existentialism. The book chronicles his struggle with the realisation that he is an entirely free agent in a world devoid of meaning; a world in which he must find his own purpose and then take total responsibility for his choices. A seminal work of contemporary literary
philosophy "Nausea" evokes and examines the dizzying angst that can come from simply trying to live. Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980) was an iconoclastic French philosopher novelist playwright and widely regarded as the central figure in post-war European culture and political thinking. Sartre famously refused the Nobel Prize for literature in 1964 on the grounds that 'a writer should not allow himself to be turned into an institution'. His most well-known works all of which are published by Penguin include "The Age of Reason" "Nausea" and "Iron in the Soul". If you enjoyed "Nausea" you might like Albert Camus' "The Outsider" also available in "Penguin Modern Classics". "One of the very few successful members of the genre "Philosophical Novel"...a young man's tour de force". (Iris Murdoch)."
