This is the unabridged audio book edition of My Animals & Other Family" Clare Balding's wildly funny & deeply moving childhood memoir read by the author herself. 'I had spent most of my childhood thinking I was a dog & I suspect I had aged in dog years. By the time I was ten I had discovered the pain of unbearable loss. I had felt joy & jealousy. Most important of all I knew how to love & how to let myself be loved. All these things I learnt through animals. Horses & dogs were my family & my friends. This is their story as much as it is mine' Clare Balding grew up in a rather unusual household. As her father is a champion trainer she shared her life with more than 100 thoroughbred racehorses mares foals & ponies as well as an ever-present pack of boxers & lurchers. As a toddler she would happily ride the legendary Mill Reef & take breakfast with the Queen. She & her younger brother came very low down the pecking order. Left to their own devices they had to learn life's toughest lessons through the animals & through their adventures in the stables & the idyllic Hampshire Downs. From the protective Candy to the pot-bellied Valkyrie & the frisky Hattie each horse & each dog had their own character & their own special part to play. The running family joke was that "women ain't people". Clare had to prove them wrong to make her voice heard
- but first she had to make sure she had something to say. " My Animals & Other Family" is a funny brave tender story of self-discovery."

Just before the start of the 2002 Wales v Scotland match in Cardiff the stadium announcer asked people to stand & acknowledge Bill McLarens great contribution to the sport. The whole ground rose leaving McLaren choking back the tears. Then came a voice in his ear: Cue Bill... Coping with his emotions on that day was obviously not straightforward even for a commentator of Bill McLarens experience used to being caught up in some of the most dramatic moments rugby has ever seen. But Bill also talks frankly about the greatest tragedy of his life: the death of his younger daughter from cancer at 46 the three-years of agony & the trauma of her final day. Bill wanted to stay at her bedside but she insisted him to go & carry out a commentating duty in Edinburgh on the Saturday afternoon. He did so rushed back to the hospital but she had died that afternoon while he was on air. McLaren himself had almost died of TB in his youth & he tells of the days & nights when he hid under the sheets in bed at the Scottish hospital where he was kept for 19 months crying myself to sleep each night as they took away my friends who had died that day. I was certain I would be next. He has excellent memories of his war years & delves deep to recall some harrowing times as a forward observation spotter when he came within inches of being killed by a German sniper. Later he also remembers leading his men one day into a small northern Italian town where they discovered 1500 corpses piled up in the square. That was the day I became a man rather quickly he says. He was 21. As well reliving the highlights of his illustrious career as a commentator Bill talks of the game today & his regrets that rugby went professional. He is a fierce critic of what this has led to & fears for the future health & safety of rugby players because he regards the modern game as dangerously physical. His story amounts to a history of the game itself & reaffirms McLarens status as something of a global treasure. ...

My Antonia

As I looked about me I felt that the grass was the country as the water is the sea. The red of the grass made all the great prairie the colour of wine-stains...And there was so much motion in it; the whole country seemed somehow to be running. My Antonia (1918) depicts the pioneering period of European settlement on the tall-grass prairie of the American midwest with its beautiful yet terrifying landscape rich ethnic mix of immigrants and native-born Americans and communities who share lifes joys and sorrows. Jim Burden recounts his memories of Antonia Shimerda whose family settle in Nebraska from Bohemia. Together they share childhoods spent in a new world. Jim leaves the prairie for college and a career in the east while Antonia devotes herself to her large family and productive farm.
Her story is that of the land itself a moving portrait of endurance and strength. Described on publication as one of the best [novels] that any American has ever done My Antonia paradoxically took Cather out of the rank of provincial novelists as the same time that it celebrated the provinces and mythologized a period of American history that had to be lost before its value could be understood.
