Aristotles probing inquiry into some of the fundamental problems of philosophy The Metaphysics" is one of the classical Greek foundation-stones of western thought translated from the with an introduction by Hugh Lawson-Tancred in " Penguin Classics". " The Metaphysics" presents Aristotles mature rejection of both the Platonic theory that what we perceive is just a pale reflection of reality & the hard-headed view that all processes are ultimately material. He argued instead that the reality or substance of things lies in their concrete forms & in so doing he probed some of the deepest questions of philosophy: What is existence? How is change possible? & are there certain things that must exist for anything else to exist at all? The seminal notions discussed in " The Metaphysics"
- of substance & associated concepts of matter & form essence & accident potentiality & actuality
- have had a profound & enduring influence & laid the foundations for one of the central branches of Western philosophy. Hugh Lawson-Tancreds lucid translation is accompanied by a stimulating introduction in which he highlights the central themes of one of philosophys supreme masterpieces. Aristotle (384-22 BC) studied at the Academy of Plato for 20 years & then established his own school & research institute The Lyceum. His writings which were of extraordinary range profoundly affected the whole course of ancient & medieval philosophy & are still eagerly studied & debated by philosophers today. If you enjoyed " The Metaphysics" you might like Aristotles " The Nicomachean Ethics" also available in " Penguin Classics"."

Collected for the first time eleven tales of Sir Seaton Begg vs Count Zodiac including the never before seen ' The Flaneur of the Arcades d' Opera'. Seaton Begg & his constant companion pathologist Dr ' Taffy' Sinclair both head the secret British Home Office section of the Metatemporal Investigation Department
- an organisation whose function is understood only by the most high-ranking government people around the world
- & a number of powerful criminals. Begg's cases cover a multitude of crimes in dozens of alternate worlds generally where transport is run by electricity where the internal combustion engine is unknown & where giant airships are the chief form of international carrier. He investigates the murder of English Prime Minister ' Lady Ratchet' the kidnapping of the king of a country taken over by a totalitarian regime & the death of Geli Raubel Adolf Hitler's mistress. Other adventures take him to a wild west where 'the Masked Buckaroo' is tracking down a mysterious red-eyed Apache known as the White Wolf; to 1960s' Chicago where a girl has been killed in a sordid disco; & to an independent state of Texas controlled by neocon Christians with oily (and bloody) hands. He visits Paris where he links up with his French colleagues of the Surete du Temps Perdu. In several cases the fanatical Adolf Hitler is his opponent but his arch-enemy is the mysterious black sword wielding aristocrat known as Zenith the Albino a drug-dependent charismatic exile from a distant realm he once ruled. In each story the Metatemporal Detectives' cases take them to worlds at once like & unlike our own sometimes at odds with & sometimes in league with the beautiful adventuresses Mrs. Una Persson or Lady Rosie von Bek. At last Begg & Sinclair come face to face with their nemesis on the moonbeam roads which cross between the universes where the great Eternal Balance itself is threatened with destruction & from which only the luckiest & most daring of metatemporal adventurers will return. These fast-paced mysteries pay homage to Moorcock's many literary enthusiasms for authors as diverse as Clarence E Mulford Dashiell Hammett Georges Simenon & his boyhood hero Sexton Blake.

A total of 10 500 missiles were launched as part of the V1 attack of which 3 957 were destroyed by the defences. Indeed it could have been much worse for by the end of the war the Germans had manufactured close to 32 000 flying bombs. The defences put forward to guard against the V1 were formidable
- 23 000 men & women with their guns radar & communications networks were installed on coastal sites. Squadrons of Britains newest Spitfires the F XIVs & Hawker Tempest Vs were kept at home to battle the new menace. Rushed into action in July 1944 to help counter the V1 threat Britains Gloster Meteor I was the first jet fighter to enter RAF service. On 4 August the Meteor scored its first V1 victory. Having just closed in on a flying bomb its officer squeezed the trigger but his guns jammed. Using the Meteors superior speed he was able to overtake the missile & using his wing tip he tipped the craft over & sent it crashing into the ground. The interceptions between the V1 & Britains Gloster Meteor were historic & ushered in a new era of aerial combat.
