On the eve of his eightieth birthday Ken Dodd is still touring the country performing in packed venues an average of two nights a week with his legendary four hour sets. 'I do it because that is what I do. I do it because that is what I am ' he said when asked why he continues with this punishing schedule. Ken Dodd's career has spanned over five decades as he went from singer to actor & presently most famously comedian. He is considered the last great music-hall inspired variety comic but what drives this man whose career has been tainted by hardship? Dodd still lives in his childhood home of Knotty Ash & has never married despite having two-long term fiances. In 1989 his strange relationship to money culminated in a trial for tax evasion & he was also famously stalked by a mystery woman. How did this feather-duster salesman become one of the most loved though least-lauded British comedians of all time? Stephen Griffin interviewed friends colleagues & fellow comedians to get inside the mind of the original Diddyman. ...

Ken Doherty is one of the most talented & successful snooker players ever to have picked up a cue & the only player ever to win the Under 21 Amateur & World Snooker Championships. In this honest & emotional autobiography Ken tells how he went from the World Snooker final at the Crucible to qualifying tables of Prestatyn & back again
- & reveals what it means to lead a Life in the Frame. Born in Ranelagh a south-eastern district of Dublin Ireland Doherty leart his trade in the legendary Jasons snooker hall standing on a biscuit tin to try & reach the balls. Coached by former Irish international Paddy Miley the young Doherty found he had a natural talent with the cue & entered in to various amateur competitions including the Irish Amateur Championships. In 1989
- at the ripe age of 20
- Doherty won the World Amateur Championship & was duly invited to become a professional of the game. Four years later after losing his first Grand Prix to Jimmy White Ken went on to win his first ranking title the Welsh Open which was enough to catapult the Darlin of Dublin into the top 16 players in the world. Doherty etched his name in the record books in 1997 by becoming only the third player outside the United Kingdom to win the World Championship beating Stephen Hendry 18-12 in the final at the Crucible. Returning to Ireland a hero Doherty would go on to play in two more World Championship finals & stay in the top 16 for over a decade.

Kendal is often described by two other names one being The Auld Grey Town & the other The Gateway to the Lakes. One of the earliest indications of the town name was in Norman times when it was known as Kirk byre Ken dale (church town in Kent dale). The central area at that time was built up around the parish church & Kirkland; & on the southern outskirts there is an ancient marker stone bearing the carving of the name Kirby Kendal. This is a fascinating area with its many old yards leading down to the River Kent. It has been home to such well known industries as Kendal Brown Snuff Kendal Socks K Shoes & Kendal Mint Cake; the first & last of these are still in production today. This unique selection of old & new images & informative captions will be essential reading for anyone who knows & loves this town. ...

First friends then bitter enemies John Kennedy & Richard Nixon shared a rivalry that had a dramatic impact on American history. One would become the most dashing figure of the post-World War II era the other would live into his eighties haunted & consumed by the rivalry. In Kennedy & Nixon Christopher Matthews offers a surprising look at these two political giants offering a stunning portrait that will change the way we think about both of them. Starting as congressmen in the class of 1946 the two men developed a friendship & admiration for each other that would last for more than a decade. But what drove history was the enmity between these two towering figures whose 1960 presidential contest would set the nations bitter course for years to come. Matthews shows how the early fondness between the two men (Kennedy told a trusted friend that if he didnt receive the Democratic nomination in 1960 he would vote for Nixon) degenerated into distrust & paranoia the same emotions that in the early 1970s ravaged the nation. Christopher Mattews revealing book sheds light on this complicated relationship & the role that it played in shaping Americas history. ...
