Joan Eardley (1921-63) is considered to be one of the most influential Scottish painters of her generation. Her paintings & drawings reflect urban & rural Scotland in an expressive visual language unlike any other artist's. This new highy illustrated survey of her painting does renewed justice to the range scale & power of her work. Her wild winter seascapes were painted out-of-doors on the shore or cliff top of Catterline a small east-coast fishing village south of Aberdeen. Eardley loved the light weather & seasonal changes of this rugged coastline. She counterbalanced her direct confrontation with the sea by immersing herself in the deep summer grasses of the surrounding fields. Before she lived in Catterline she had made her name with potently realistic but tender depictions of Glasgow slum children & the black tenements & grimy streets they inhabited. Her studio at Townhead was as close to this teeming city life as her cottage in Catterline was to sea & field. She continued to work in both the country & the city until her death at the age of only 42 in 1963. The world was robbed of an outstanding artist at the height of her achievement. In this new book about Eardley Christopher Andreae provides a fresh assessment of her work & its relative Scottishness or universality. He relates her art to the work of contemporaries such as Josef Herman to inspired teachers such as Hugh Adam Crawford & considers the impact of Renaissance art of 20th-century European expressionism & modern American art. The author also looks at her relationships "es from letters previously embargoed & discusses published & unpublished assessments of her work both during her life & posthumously. ...

Joanna George & Henry tells the story of the intertwined lives of three young artists in the 1850s. When the transcript of the material on which this group portrait is based came to light ten years ago no one could have imagined the drama within. They were family letters: letters from a young woman to her brother & later to her suitor
- of interest chiefly because all three were painters & all were active participants in the youthful Pre-Raphaelite revolution that swept England in the 1850s. They turned out to be a revelation
- giving not only a comprehensive picture of what it was like to be an artist in the mid-19th century but containing within them a powerful family drama & a most unusual love story. It is a love story moreover told largely from a womans point of view. Joanna Boyces dedication to her art was absolute: she studied in Paris under Thomas Couture & had her first painting exhibited at the Academy when she was only 24. She was headstrong self-critical opinionated & teasing
- an artist with her pen as well as her brush. She died tragically young. Between them Joanna her brother George & suitor Henry Wells knew all the artistic luminaries of the day among them Ruskin Millais & Rossetti (with whom George shared a great deal including mistresses). They wrote to each other not just about art but about their friends their favourite books their travels their illnesses their passions & their quarrels. In this book they tell their story in their own vivid words
- a story which portrays the age in which they lived & the powerful drama of their emotional & professional lives. Sue Bradbury taught in Spain for three years before joining The Folio Society in 1973. She became Editorial Director in 1984 a post she held for twenty-five years. Her own publications include translations of Three Tragedies by Federico Garcia Lorca a novel Midnight Madonna set in the Spanish Civil War & a four-volume history of the world in contemporary accounts
- Eyewitness to History
- with Robert Fox. She was awarded the OBE in 2010.
