A provocative look at how & why Britain has fallen into decline from being a superpower in 1914 to being a third world economy in 2014 by two of Britains leading Economists journalists With a second recession looming Britain is facing a moment of truth. Going South examines how the leader of the Industrial Revolution came to exhibit the features of a developing country." The symptoms of this vertiginous plunge in the worlds rankings are already starkly apparent: a chronic balance of payment deficit a looming shortage of energy & food a dysfunctional labor market volatility in economic growth & a painful vulnerability to external events. & if these are the big indicators of imminent relegation to the Third World many smaller ones are too numerous to fully catalogue. So stark is the evidence that it is our contention that Britains looming relegation is not in doubt. The names change with intellectual fashion--the developing world the Third World less-developed countries "emerging markets " or simply the Global South. But the destination is the same. Britain is going south--rapidly. Assuming that Britain faces up to its plight there is no easy model for the redevelopment of the national economy. Whichever path is taken will be a hard one. The age of the quick fixes is over." ...

America is a grotesquely polarized society & becoming more so all the time. In this razor-sharp funny & terrifying collection of pieces Barbara Ehrenreich shows how the widening gap between rich & poor over the past eight years has left the country increasingly divided between the gated communities on the one hand & the trailer parks & tenements on the other. She describes a country where the super-rich travel by private jet while low-paid workers make multiple bus trips to get to their jobs; where a wealthy minority obsessively consumes cosmetic surgery while the poor often go without basic health care for their children; where members of the moneyed elite can buy congressmen while a troubling proportion of the working class can barely buy lunch. Ehrenreich writes corruscatingly about the pay of CEOs the treatment of illegal immigrants the way Wal-Mart spies on & interrogates its employees & the fact that its easier to get health insurance in America for a pet than for a child. Going to Extremes" brilliantly anatomises a nation approaching its 2008 election scarred by deepening equality & corroded by distrust." ...

Going To Sea In A Sieve

Born in 1957 in Deptford south London Danny's first job after dropping out of school at the age of 15 was in One Stop Records a small record shop in London's West End frequented by Elton John and Mick Jagger a store rather like the one in High Fidelity. His career in print journalism began in 1976 when he co-founded the fanzine Sniffin' Glue leading to an offer from the New Musical Express where his first job was as a receptionist. Soon after Baker was contributing regular astute articles reviews and later interviews to the publication. Danny then began making 30-minute documentaries at LWT for the cult series 20th Century Box and appeared in two television commercials: Daz washing powder and Mars bar chocolate. His stellar career on the radio began on BBC GLR in 1989 then moved to BBC
Radio 5 where he presented sports shows including the groundbreaking 6-0-6 which still influences the media's approach to criticism of players managers and referees. He also worked on BBC Radio 1 back to BBC GLR Talk Radio and later on Virgin Radio. On his return to BBC last May Danny won 'Sony Radio Personality of the Year' and appeared on Desert Island Discs last July. Six months earlier he had gone public on his cancer and chemotherapy treatment and thankfully all seems well. Danny Baker currently presents a weekday show at BBC London 94.9 which features phone-ins and discussions with his on-air team regarding music and entertainment of the 1960s and 1970s and a Saturday morning show on BBC Radio 5. This book charts Danny's showbiz career the highs and lows and everything in between
including the accusation that he killed Bob Marley...
