Mike Carney the oldest living native Blasket Islander was born on The Great Blasket Island off the southwest of Ireland in 1920. Raised under challenging circumstances in that unique isolated Irish-speaking community Mike left in 1937 to seek a better future in Dublin & eventually in America. The death on the island of his younger brother without a priest or doctor in 1947 set off a chain of events that led to its evacuation. Mike played a pivotal role in the evacuation personally lobbying Eamon de Valera to relocate the remaining Islanders living in increasingly desperate conditions. Joining the millions who emigrated from Ireland to the United States Mike settled in Springfield Massachusetts with other former islanders. While taking advantage of opportunities offered by his adopted country he never lost his love for the nation of his birth saying its like loving both parents. This is the story of his life & his efforts to promote Irish culture in America to preserve the memory of The Great Blasket to respect roots left behind & to set down roots in a new l&. Written as Mike approached the age of ninety-two this memoir is probably the last of a long line of books written by Blasket Islanders including Tomas OCrohan Micheal OSulleabhain & Peig Sayers. A first-person saga recounting one mans life but relating the experience of many it chronicles a lifetime devoted to family community & legacy. All the while he seems haunted by the immortal words of OCrohan: The likes of us will not be again. ...

The astonishing story of a young man's upbringing in a remote tribal village in Burma & his journey from his strife-torn country to the tranquil quads of Cambridge. In lyrical prose Pascal Khoo Thwe describes his childhood as a member of the Padaung hill tribe where ancestor worship & communion with spirits blended with the tribe's recent conversion to Christianity. In the 1930s Pascal's grandfather captured an Italian Jesuit mistaking him for a giant or a wild beast; the Jesuit in turn converted the tribe. (The Padaung are famous for their 'giraffe women'
- so-called because their necks are ritually elongated with ornamental copper rings. Pascal's grandmother had been exhibited in a touring circus in England as a 'freak'.) Pascal developed a love of the English language through listening to the BBC World Service & it was while working as a waiter in Mandalay to pay for his studies that he met the Cambridge don John Casey who was to prove his saviour. The brutal military regime of Ne Win cracked down on 'dissidents' in the late 1980s. Pascal's girlfriend was raped & murdered by soldiers & Pascal took to the jungle with a guerrilla army. How he was eventually rescued with Casey's help is a dramatic story which ends with his admission to Cambridge to study his great love English literature.

From The Imjin To The Hook

The British Army's considerable contribution to The Korean War 1950 - 1953 was largely composed of 'conscripts' or national servicemen. Plucked from civilian life on a 'lottery' basis and given a short basic training some like Jim Jacobs volunteered for overseas duty and suddenly found themselves in the thick of a war as intensive and dangerous as anything the Second World War had had to offer. As a member of 170 Independent Mortar Battery RA from March 1951 to June 1952 Jim was in the frontline at the famous Battle of the Imjin River. By great luck he evaded capture - and death - unlike so many. He returned to the UK only to volunteer again for a second tour with 120 Light Battery from March 1953 to March 1954. During this period he was in the thick of the action at the Third Battle of
the Hook during May 1953. In this gripping memoir Jim calmly and geographically recounts his experiences and emotions from joining the Army through training the journeys by troopship and most importantly on active service in the atrocious and terrifying war fighting that went on in a very foreign place.
