An airfield was first established at Filton just north of Bristol in 1911 after the establishment of the British & Colonial Aeroplane Company. The company & its descendents have used the airfield ever since to develop aviation technology. Filton Airfield has also played host to a military presence starting with the Royal Flying Corps in 1915 continuing with a Spitfire squadron during the Battle of Britain & into the jet age with Vampire fighters. In Filton Airfield Through Time Andrew Appleton uses a wonderful collection of old & new photographs to show us the intriguing past of this key site in British aviation history from the manufacture of military aircraft during the First & Second World Wars through the servicing of BOAC airliners during the 1950s & the development of Concorde during the 1960s to the present day & the closure of the airfield by BAE Systems. ...

These are the chapters he had completed of the final voyage of Jack Aubrey & Stephen Maturin -- the greatest friendship of modern literature The story picks up from the end of Blue at the Mizzen when Jack Aubrey receives the news in Chile of his elevation to flag rank: Rear Admiral of the Blue Squadron with orders to sail to the South Africa station. This novel unfinished & untitled at the time of OBrians death would have been a chronicle of that mission & much else besides. The chapters left on OBrians death are presented here both in printed version -- including his corrections to the typescript -- & a facsimilie of his manuscript which goes several pages beyond the end of the typescript &

marginal notes by OBrian. & so this great roman fleuve comes to an end with Jack with his sacred blue flag sailing through fair sweet days -- Stephen with his dissections & new love Killick muttering darkly over the toasted cheese! Of course we would rather have had the whole story; instead we have this proof that OBrians powers of observation his humour & his understanding of his characters were undiminished to the end.
