Since its first appearance in 1991 The European Reformation has offered a clear integrated & coherent analysis & explanation of how Christianity in Western & Central Europe from Iceland to Hungary from the Baltic to the Pyrenees splintered into separate Protestant & Catholic identities & movements. Catholic Christianity at the end of the Middle Ages was not at all a uniformly decadent or corrupt institution: it showed clear signs of cultural vigour & inventiveness. However it was vulnerable to a particular kind of criticism if ever its claims to mediate the grace of God to believers were challenged. Martin Luther proposed a radically new insight into how God forgives human sin. In this new theological vision rituals did not purify people; priests did not need to be set apart from the ordinary community; the church needed no longer to be an international body. For a critical Reformation moment this idea caught fire in the spiritual political & community life of much of Europe. Lay people seized hold of the instruments of spiritual authority & transformed religion into something simpler more local more rooted in their own community. So were born the many cultures liturgies musical traditions & prayer lives of the countries of Protestant Europe. This new edition embraces & responds to developments in scholarship over the past twenty years. Substantially re-written & updated with both a thorough revision of the text & fully updated references & bibliography it nevertheless preserves the distinctive features of the original including its clearly thought-out integration of theological ideas & political cultures helping to bridge the gap between theological & social history & the use of helpful charts & tables that made the original so easy to use. ...

Evacuation Stations is not only an acutely observed recollection of a child evacuee it is also about a boys growing into self-awareness during the 1940s beginning the journey that would take him from his Catholic working-class roots to a history scholarship at Christs College Cambridge. The centre of his world is his mother Dorrie. With evacuation in 1939 her values & the norms of life he has learned came to be set alongside the other adults who enter his life: the country stationmaster; Auntie Ethel who coolly controls him & his brothers as she does her husband; the piano-playing medical student Gilbert & his Spanish-born mother who gave him a love of music & a lifelong interest in Europe; Vincent Bywater the young Jesuit who teaches him to master a bicycle & map-reading sources of independence & adventure; & Father Delahunty the complete teacher who singlehandedly created a miniature Jesuit grammar school with a rump of evacuee boys. His mother Dorrie sometimes near & sometimes far away remains a constant influence but as he grows up Peter awakens gradually to her experience of the war as something quite different from his own. The end of the war leaves him something of a displaced person seeking a rebirth of pre-war life but aware he was attempting the impossible. ...

Euston Station Through Time

Built as the London terminus of the London & Birmingham Railway in July 1837 Euston was London's first intercity railway station. Originally designed by Philip Hardwick the station entrance was through the world's largest Doric propylaeum which became known as the Euston Arch. In the 1840s the station was expanded greatly and by 1923 express trains left Euston regularly for Wales Scotland and the major cities of England including Birmingham Manchester and Liverpool. In 1961 - 2 the original station was demolished to a huge outcry and a new modernist station built in its place. In 2007 it was announced that the station would be rebuilt once more but these plans fell by the wayside and in 2011 a new plan was announced. Euston is one of London's busiest stations and may eventually be the
terminus of the HS2 line. Join the author on a journey through time telling the story of Euston from 1837 to the present day.
