Doctor Who has been on global television screens for nearly fifty years & many of its most memorable protagonists have been its monsters The Daleks Cybermen Slitheen the Sonterans Ood Wiirrn & others. Entertainingly & provocatively written & introduced by Who scriptwriter Paul Cornell The Doctors Monsters takes a new look at these & many other creatures & asks what inspired them & what lies behind them. If the Daleks are based on ideas of genetic purity & the Cybermen on fears of transplant surgery what about the Autons the Zarbi or the Weeping Angels? Science fiction critic Graham Sleight examines stories from the whole of Doctor Whos history to give this unique perspective on the series. Why are we so scared of monsters? Why do they look & act the way they do? How do they reflect the time & place that the series is broadcast in? Along the way the book provides a history
- from an unusual angle
- of how this most enduring of TV science fiction series has created & recreated itself. The book also contains a comprehensive glossary of the creatures seen in Doctor Who. It is a must for any fan of the series.

There is a perception that doctors speak among themselves in an arcane language bounce classic Latin & Greek diagnoses at their patients & write prescriptions in an indecipherable Latin scrawl to ensure that no one except a trained pharmacist can read them. The fact is that Latin & Greek are the traditional languages of medicine. Latin is used to describe the anatomy of the body while many of our diagnostic labels & pathological terms are derived from Greek. In addition because Latin is a dead & unchanging language it allows us to follow a timeline back to the beginnings of medicine. We can hear the views of the early Roman doctors just as they uttered them. But apart from giving you an insight into the language of doctors this medical miscellany contains many interesting facts & snippets of information. It will tell you why testicles were so vitally important to the Romans; what causes rigor mortis after death; what happened to the skin of William Burke the infamous body-snatcher; & what became of the famed Roman orator Marcus Tullius Cicero. ...

The bed was broken & tilted grotesquely sideways. Harrison was sprawled over in a huddle of soiled blankets. His mouth was twisted.. . Harrison had been an expert on deadly mushrooms. How was it then that he had eaten a large quantity of death-dealing muscarine? Was it an accident? Suicide? Or murder? The documents in the case seemed to be a simple collection of love notes & letters home. But they concealed a clue to the brilliant murderer who baffled the best minds in London. ' She combined literary prose with powerful suspense & it takes a rare talent to achieve that. A truly great storyteller.' Minette Walters ...

This is the autobiography of a Rangers legend. Alex Mac Donalds compelling memoirs cover his formative years as a player with St Johnstone his rise to fame with Rangers his transfer to Hearts where he became player-manager & his time in charge at Airdrie. But Doddie is quintessentially a Rangers man having grown up in Glasgow supporting them & then going on to play a key role in the clubs 1972 Cup Winners Cup triumph. Doddie won 12 medals in a glittering career including a highly-prized European one during his time with Rangers yet as he reveals a chance meeting with Celtic manager Jock Stein might have resulted in him signing for the Old Firms other half. Etched indelibly in his memory too is the dejection he suffered when Hearts lost the League Championship & Scottish Cup within the space of a week in the mid-1980s & his subsequent delight at leading Airdrie into Europe. Doddie" is a fascinating story both for his lifelong love affair with football & his more personal story of growing up in Glasgow his love of animals & his midlife crisis when he put the car in the garage & headed out on the highway on a brand new Harley Davidson. It has been a life full of adventures & characters & the highs & lows of his life & career are entertainingly & engagingly told." ...

Doctored Evidence

When a wealthy Venetian woman is found brutally murdered the prime suspect is her Romanian maid who has fled the city. As she attempts to leave the country carrying a considerable sum of money and forged papers the maid runs into the path of an oncoming train and is killed. Case closed. But when the old woman's neighbour returns from abroad it becomes clear that the maid could not have been the killer. Commissario Brunetti decides - unofficially - to take the case on himself. As Brunetti investigates it becomes clear that the motive for the murder was unlikely to have been greed rather that it had its roots in the temptations of lust. But perhaps Brunetti is thinking of the wrong deadly sin altogether...
