This is the story of Augustus Rose -- half African-American half Italian; journalist lover restauranteur unlikely terrorist -- & his interrogator Harper a Grand Inquisitor armed with twenty-first century cruelty clarity & charisma. As Harpers assault on his body & soul intensifies Augustus raises the only shield he has: memory. His mind turns to the women in his life from his outcast mother to the vigilante who recruited him to the last female tenderness hes ever likely to know. Outshining them all is the memory of the stunning wealthy & white Selina & the love affair that began in 1960s Manhattan -- an epic taboo mix of politics & passion that would lead Augustus from Harlem to Greenwich Village from El Salvador to Barcelona from Morocco to a bleak Scottish island where hope or death must overcome... ...

The Editor writes: As a young man the apostle Paul was influential & knowledgeable but after his Damascus road encounter with Jesus he found a new focus. In his letter to the Philippians he wrote I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord for whose sake I have lost all things (Philippians 3:8" NIV 1984). This was Pauls assessment of his life. What about you? New Year is often a time for stocktaking. What are my goals? How far have I come? How far have I still to go? What do I need to get there? I had a friend who was diagnosed with motor neurone disease. Medically she was given a gloomy prognosis measured in months not years. As part of her Christian journey she was reading the book of " Esther" & came to the passage where Esther has been chosen to meet the king. Esthers preparation takes twelve months. My friend began to see her final months as a period of preparation to meet the King of kings. She took part in a womens event at her church in the weeks before she died. Unable to speak or eat & confined to a wheelchair she was still able to participate in the day of worship & teaching. At the end it was as if her face shone; she told her husband on the way home (using her type pad) Im ready to go. Her eternal home was waiting. She died peacefully not long afterwards. None of us knows the time still allotted to us. For each of us our months & years are all part of our preparation to meet King Jesus. Paul said I want to know Christ & the power of his resurrection & the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings becoming like him in his death & so somehow to attain to the resurrection from the dead (" Philippians 3:10-11"). In the coming few months we will focus particularly on Jesus life death & resurrection as recorded by " Luke". As you start the year & these daily notes ask for Gods help to make 2013 count as a year when you get to know Jesus better. Utterly in love with Jesus Christ & living in poverty Francis of Assisi touched history. Christians followers of other religions & even those who declare they have no faith find they have something in common with him that stirs their sympathy. In 1209 as a young man from the Umbrian region he went to see the pope. He sought permission to live exactly as Jesus Christ had done: poor obedient celibate. From a distance the pope saw Francis & his eleven companions. But he had Francis sent away banishing from his presence the very man sent by providence who could have turned his hopes for the Church into reality. Later the pope recalled a dream he'd had. He had seen the Lateran basilica leaning dangerously to one side when suddenly a little monk looking like a beggar supported it with his shoulder & stopped it from collapsing. ' Of course ' the pope understood 'that monk was Francis of Assisi!' How could he not listen to him? We today can listen to him through his writings the stories & biographies that speak of him. It would be like a new dawn reversing the decline all around us into a new future. The texts in this book can all be found in the Early Documents series of the Franciscan movement published by New City in three volumes plus a fourth volume containing the index for these Early Documents. ...
