Hugh Dennis has secretly been worrying about what being British" meant for nearly a decade ever since his friend Ardal O' Hanlon had told him in passing that he was the most British person he had ever met. Hugh was unclear whether he was being praised teased vaguely insulted or possibly all three
- because it has always been very difficult to know how to feel about being British. & then the London Olympics came along. We gave the world a gleaming new vision of Britain; a smiling Britain of achievement a Britain responsible for leading the world into the modern era through the Agrarian & Industrial revolutions a nation proud to embrace multi-culturalism individuality & eccentricity. A country where a major politician can dangle helplessly from a zip wire like a discarded straw dolly & gain in popularity & whose Queen can send herself up & then descend by parachute. The unexpected legacy of the Games has been a Britain with a new found self-confidence in which we all know how to be British. A Britain which should be embarrassed by nothing & proud of everything from sheep to chimneys to the Spice Girls to industrial action & what had always previously been described as our "ailing transport network". A Britain which having been pinned firmly in its own half has dribbled the length of the field nutmegged the defenders unleashed a curling dipping shot into the top right hand corner scored a wonder goal & is now kissing the badge. This is Hugh Dennis' exploration of the changing image of Britain & Britishness."

This is the story as told by a man who was both a devoted fan & a loyal team member of British Racing Motors. Who saw & was involved in the repeated failures & humiliating times of the 1950 s through the gradual progress of winning minor races to Jo Bonnier winning the first World Championship Grand Prix in Holland in 1959. Culminating in the ultimate honour in 1962 when in East London South Africa Graham Hill drove the BRM to victory to win both the drivers World Championship & the Constructors Championship for the BRM team. Thereby making a considerable contribution to British motor racing history. British Racing Motors (generally known as BRM) was a British Formula 1 motor racing team often described as Britain's Ferrari as it built its own cars. Founded in 1945 the team raced from 1950 to 1977 competing in 197 Grand Prix & winning 17. This is the BRM story told by a man who was both a devoted fan & a loyal member of the British Racing Motors team. Seen purely from a mechanic's point of view this account of BRM is generally complimentary but at times is critical of personnel & procedures. Dick Salmon was involved in the repeated failures & humiliations of the 1950s through the gradual progress of winning minor races to the excitement of Jo Bonnier winning the first World Championship Grand Prix in Holland in 1959. BRM's glory culminated in the ultimate honor in 1962 when in East London South Africa Graham Hill drove a BRM to victory to win both the Driver's World Championship & in doing so brought the Constructor's Championship to the BRM team thereby making a considerable contribution to international motor racing history. Probably for the first time criticism is levelled at both Louis Stanley & the introduction of the H16 engine as contributory factors to the ultimate failure of British Racing Motors: Louis Stanley for his freeloading extravagance & the rather foolish decision by BRM's management to build such a complicated & bulky power unit. ...

BRM (British Racing Motors) was a motor racing venture created in 1950 to represent Britain in the new Formula 1 category. A symbol of Britains post-war rebirth the BRM car did nothing by halves: its 1.5-litre 16-cylinder supercharged engine & advanced

Specification made it a technical tour de force but it earned a reputation as a fantastic folly such that Stirling Moss described it as without doubt the worst car I ever drove. This book is a fascinating portrait of a racing car that still engenders enduring fascination.
