Richard Holmes highly acclaimed military historian & broadcaster tells the exhilarating story of Britain's greatest-ever soldier the man who posed the most serious threat to Napoleon. The Duke of Wellington's remarkable life & extraordinary campaigns are recreated with Holmes' superb skill in this compelling book. Richard Holmes charts Wellington's stellar military career from India to Europe & in the process rediscovers the reasons Queen Victoria called him the greatest man the nineteenth century had produced. Combining his astute historical analysis with a semi-biographical examination of Wellington Holmes artfully illustrates the rapid evolution in military & political thinking of the time. Wellington is a brilliant figure idealistic in politics cynical in love a wit a beau a man of enormous courage often sickened by war. As Richard Holmes charts his progress from a shy indolent boy to commander-in-chief of the allied forces he also exposes the Iron Duke as a philanderer & a man who sometimes despised the men that he led & was not always in control of his soldiers. Particularly infamous is the bestial rampage of his men after the capture of Cuidad Rodgrigo & Badajoz. THE IRON DUKE is a beautifully produced book complete with stunning illustrations & colour plates. In the glory years of the 1970s Wales won three grand slams in eight seasons. But rarely since then had the men in red started a Six Nations campaign armed with expectation rather than hope. 2012 was different. The previous year they had come within a kick of reaching the World Cup final losing by a point to France despite playing for the last hour with 14 men after their captain Sam Warburton had been sent off for a dangerous tackle. The question when they returned home was how they would cope with the heartache. The answer came in their first match in the 2012 Six Nations Championship. In Dublin against Ireland the team they had knocked out in the World Cup quarter-final revenge was on the menu. Wales went there without five of their leading forwards & lost Warburton to injury at half-time. They were trailing by six points with five minutes to go & had a player in the sin-bin. The old Wales would have folded but as in Life on Mars it was back to the spirit of the 1970s. This Wales team came back fighting to win not only the game but to sweep the board in the whole tournament bringing home a Welsh grand slam for the third time in eight years & establishing a strong & exciting team for the future. ...

Wells Through Time

At first sight Wells has changed little over the last 150 years and Edwardian residents would still feel at home. This is particularly so in the east around the cathedral and the market place. On the other hand the west of the city which once boasted three railway stations has been altered out of all recognition. The buildings themselves have remained much as they always have been but this is far from the case when it comes to occupancy. Wells Through Time takes the visitor on a guided tour of Britains smallest and loveliest city. Many of the older pictures were taken by the Philips City Studio a business that operated in the Market Place for the best part of a century and it is to be hoped that these photographs will prove an inspiration to those who visit Wells today and a souvenir for
those who have known the city in days gone by.
