Tommy Broom was one of the RAF's most legendary & popular heroes of World War II. He joined the service at eighteen years of age in 1932 & after service in the Middle East he first saw action against Germany in a Fairey Battle during 1939 with No 105 (B) Squadron. He continued to serve with 105 Squadron until November 1940 a period that included the disastrous Battle of France & the low-level attacks on the Channel ports to destroy the invasion barges in both of which actions the squadron suffered severe losses. Having completed more than his share of front-line flying he was transferred to 13 Operational Training Unit at Bicester to teach the influx of newly-trained navigators the additional skills required for combat situations. He returned to 105 (B) Squadron in January 1942 to complete a further tour. In August of the same year he was again posted to the educational role this time at 1655 Mosquito Training Unit where he stayed until May 1944. He then returned to front-line flying until the end of the war belonging to numbers 571 (B) 128 (B) & 163 (B) Mosquito Squadrons. Tommy completed 83 operations during the war & teamed up with a namesake as his pilot Ivor Broom
- they became known as the ' Flying Brooms' & completed 57 operations together. The citation for one of his Distinguished Flying Crosses reads: ' Flight Lieutenant Broom DFC was a navigator in a Mosquito aircraft of 128 Squadron detailed to place a 4000 lb bomb up to the mouth of a railway tunnel in the region of Kaiserslautern on the morning of the 1st of January 1945. This operation required great skill determination & the utmost precision. By hisassistance to his pilot this attack was carried out most successfully. Flight Lieutenant Broom has completed 73 operations against German targets the majority of which were heavily defended & including 15 against Berlin. He has at all times shown consistent keenness & skill.' During 1942 his aircraft crashed into an electricity pylon near Antwerp at over 250mph. Both he & his pilot miraculously escaped back to the UK. This book is full of exciting flying & dangerous escapes but the good nature & quite confidence of this brilliant navigator has drawn praise from the pilots he flew with & those he trained. Tom Evans lives in the small West-country town of Portishead near Bristol & is a firm friend of Tommy Broom. This book was first published in 1999 as 'A Posset Lad' & was printed privately for a mostly local readership.

If the financial City of London is her heart & the parks her lungs then Londons squares must be her soul. The London square is quintessentially English. Residential or commercial historical or architecturally ground-breaking the square is one of the capitals most familiar & loved features. Square London endeavours to investigate the history of the London square from its oldest
- Covent Garden & Bloomsbury to its most recent
- Canada & Highbury. The focus is not on architectural value or style but on the life of the square its occupants past & present significant events of national importance & the dark secrets of individual buildings & their tenants. Each square featured in this book has its own unique story whether through buildings which still exist or have sadly disappeared characters both past & present or events of tremendous public joy or deep shock & horror. What becomes apparent is the role the London square has played in the history of this great nation. The squares of London mirror the capitals highs & lows from the celebrations in Trafalgar Square when Britain was awarded the 2012 Olympic games to the loss & devastation on July 7th when terrorists killed 52 innocent people
- 13 of them in Tavistock Square. It has been over 100 years since the publication of a book about Londons squares & this book seeks to address the void of past historical neglect & link the London square to events of national & international importance.

There are some books we publish which from the outset you know are going to be special. This was true of the first book from Philip Howard: a collection of recipes from his restaurant The Square. We knew we wouldn't be able do the recipes justice in one volume so it became two
- a first volume The Square: The Cookbook Volume 1: Savoury followed by The Square: The Cookbook Volume 2: Sweet (due in June 2013). We knew we couldn't limit it to the conventional two pages per recipe & food photo so they each became either 4 or 6 pages. We knew we couldn't illustrate anything less than every one of those recipes so one of the world's finest food photographers Jean Cazals did just that. & yet these measures which bring this colossal first volume of Philip Howard's recipes in at 528 pages are only a small part of why this book is so special. It is special because it represents a collection of recipes from 21 years of one of the country's finest & most consistently fine restaurants. Special because the chef who has been at the helm of that restaurant for all of those years is recognised as one of the very best of his generation. But most of all it is special because that chef has that rare ability to translate a genius in the restaurant kitchen into the words of a book. This was evident from the day we received the first written recipe & with it Phil's fiercely intelligent vision for how the book
- & every recipe within it
- should be structured. It is also manifest in the dozen or so essays that weave throughout that show a profound consideration & passion for every aspect of his craft & industry. The Square: The Cookbook Volume 1: Savoury is a landmark publication & a must-have book for every chef & for every serious foodie without question. Yet it will not also fail to impress & inspire anyone with a desire for cooking & a thirst for food knowledge. It will be recognised as nothing less than an incredible achievement & a book of truly unbounded culinary ambition.
