Philip Larkins Oxford Book of Twentieth-Century English Verse provoked controversy & dispute on first publication in 1973. Warmly welcomed by fellow poets John Betjeman & W.H. Auden it was also considered a quirky & idiosyncratic collection by some critics. Today it is recognized as a fine & wide-ranging selection of modern verse valuable not least because it reflects the tastes of one of the best & best-loved English poets of the twentieth century. As the successor to W.B. Yeatss Oxford Book of Modern Verse 1892-1935 this anthology made a radical re-assessment of the centurys achievement in poetry; it represented verse that was lighter in tone more understated more casual more conversational more colloquial in a way more democratic & more domestic than it was for Yeats. It also introduced many little-known poets whose names have not entered the canon & whose contributions add colour & depth to the anthology. As Philip Larkin writes in his Preface in choosing poems rather than individuals he has brought together poems that will give pleasure to their readers both separately & as a collection. For this latest reissue the poets biographer Andrew Motion has written a new Foreword in which he considers the nature of Larkin as editor. ...

The Victorians excelled at telling ghost stories. In an age of rapid scientific progress the idea of a vindictive past able to reach out & violate the present held a special potential for terror. Throughout the nineteenth century fictional ghost stories developed in parallel with the more general Victorian fascination with death & what lay beyond it. Though they were as much a part of the cultural & literary fabric of the age as imperial confidence the best of them still retain their original power to surprise & unsettle. The editors map out the development of the ghost story from 1850 to the early years of the twentieth century & demonstrate the importance of this form of short fiction in Victorian popular culture. As well as reprinting stories by supernatural specialists such as J. S. Le Fanu & M. R. James this selection also emphasizes the key role played by women writers
- Elizabeth Gaskell Mrs Craik Rhoda Broughton & Charlotte Riddell among many others
- & offers one or two genuine rarities for the supernatural fiction enthusiast to savour. Other writers represented include Charles Dickens Henry James Wilkie Collins Sir Arthur Conan Doyle & R. L. Stevenson. The editors also provide a fascinating introduction detailed source notes & a chronological list of ghost stories collections from 1850 to 1910.
