From the late 1950s Mancunians have had a passion for creating & following great music. Be it live or via recordings the city centre has been a magnet for generations of locals
- & in recent years music fans from all over the country & beyond
- to enjoy. Whilst cities such as Liverpool & Memphis turned their musical heritage into a tourist attractions Manchester kept looking forward developing new scenes & tastes. Yet the 2002 film Twenty-Four Hour Party People" was probably the point at which Manchester music fans started to look back at the rich musical history of their city. This coincided with the publication of the book " Morrisseys Manchester" by Phill Gatenby also in 2002 & numerous other publications penned by luminaries of the Manchester scene. Following the success of " Morrisseys Manchester" a guide book dedicated to locations associated with The Smiths author Phill Gatenby has put together several tours featuring other world famous Manchester bands from the Buzzcocks via Joy Division to Oasis Elbow & Doves as well as the various scenes from beat to acid house or even lo-fi. An interesting guide for anyone with an interest in British music the guide documents the various clubs & venues that have influenced Manchester based musicians over the last 50 years."

Unlike its near neighbour working-class Salford Manchester proved able to raise eight Pals battalions. Initially these battalions were composed of middle-class men who experience before the war years was within the commercial financial & manufacturing interests which formed the foundations of Edwardian Manchester's life & prosperity. Manchester was undeniably proud of its pals battalions; that the area was capable of raising. Seven months after their arrival in France the battle of the Somme was launched on the fateful 1st July 1916. On the right of the British Army's extraordinary efforts that day the Manchester Pals were part of one of the few successful actions taking the villages of Montauban & Mametz & making a deep incursion into the German defences north of the River Somme. ...

This fascinating illustrated regimental history contains photographs between the 1860s & the last days of the Manchester Regiment in 1958 when it ceased to exist as a distinct unit. During this time the Regiment served in most parts of the Empire including areas as diverse as India South Africa Egypt Palestine Singapore Malaya & later Germany. The two regular battalions of the Manchester Regiment were formed by the amalgamation of the 63rd (West Suffolk) & 96th Regiments of Foot during the Cardwell-Childers reforms of the British Armed Forces. Whilst serving abroad many of the soldiers families went with them & this book records the legacy & offers a detailed insight both military & family life at this time.
