Malory Towers is a boarding school for girls in Cornwall. Enid Blyton wrote six books for this series between 1946 & 1951. The heroine is Darrell Rivers who enters the school in the first form & becomes head girl when she is in the sixth. But of course its not all plain sailing for Darrell & her friends! Malory Towers has six forms from the first to the sixth & four house towers&8212; North South East & West. There are about forty girls in each form divided among the four houses. Darrell & Co are in North Tower where most of the action takes place & where the girls try not to run foul of strict housemistress Miss Potts or the equally strict Matron. St Clares is a boarding-school for girls. Like Malory Towers the books follow the girls from first form upwards although disappointingly St Clares finishes at the end of the fifth form. The series is a little odd in that it has three first form books one second form one fourth & one fifth rather than the standard one-book-per-form format. The main characters are the twins Pat & Isobel OSullivan who arrive at the school in the first book. Other main characters are the hot-tempered Janet the playful Bobby steady head-girl Hilary wild circus girl Carlotta feather-head Alison strict mistresses Miss Roberts & Miss Jenks scatty French teacher Mamzelle (surely not!) & wise kind headmistress Miss Theobald. In the desperate battle for Malta in 1941-2 when German & Italian bombers pounded the island the arrival of Spitfire Mark Vs helped turn the tables in favour of the Allies. Flown from RN & USN carriers & some even direct from Gibraltar the Spitfires significantly enhanced the defences. For many years arguments have raged about the precise colour schemes carried by these aircraft. In this new book Malta-based aviation historian Brian Cauchi looks at all the evidence
- from photographs & personal memories through to surviving parts of these aircraft
- & presents his personal interpretation of the many colour schemes official & otherwise carried by these hard-pressed & hard-working warplanes.
