Channelling a razor-sharp satire through the everyday mishaps of the immortal comic character Mr Pooter George & Weedon. Grossmiths The Diary of a Nobody" is edited with an introduction & notes by Ed Glinert in " Penguin Classics". Mr Pooter is a man of modest ambitions content with his ordinary life. Yet he always seems to be troubled by disagreeable tradesmen impertinent young office clerks & wayward friends not to mention his devil-may-care son Lupin with his unsuitable choice of bride. In the bumbling absurd yet ultimately endearing character of Pooter the Grossmith brothers created a wonderful portrait of the class system & the inherent snobbishness of the suburban middle-class suburbia
- one which sends up the late Victorian crazes for Aestheticism spiritualism & bicycling as well as the fashion for publishing diaries by anybody & everybody. This edition contains the original illustrations by Weedon Grossmith & an introduction by Ed Glinert author of " The London Compendium" discussing the novels serialisation in " Punch" the growth of the suburbs & the figure of Mrs Pooter. George Grossmith (1847-1912) initially worked as a journalist reporting Police Court proceedings for " The Times". In 1870 he began his career as a singer & entertainer creating some of the most memorable characters in Gilbert & Sullivans operettas. Weedon Grossmith (1854-1919) brother of George was educated at the Slade & the Royal Academy with a view to following a career as a painter & exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery & the Royal Academy. Joining a theatre company in 1885 he toured the provinces & America. The best-known of his many plays " The Night of the Party" was published in 1901. If you enjoyed " The Diary of a Nobody" you might like Jerome K. Jeromes " Three Men in a Boat" also available in " Penguin Classics". " The funniest book in the world." (" Evelyn Waugh"). " True humour.. .with its mixture of absurdity irony & affection.. .a masterpiece immortal." (J.B. Priestley)."

The Diary of a Nobody is so unassuming a work that even its author George Grossmith seemed unaware that he had produced a masterpiece. For more than a century this wonderfully comic portrayal of suburban life & values has remained in print a source of delight to generations of readers & a major literary influence much imitated but never equalled. If you don't recognise yourself at some point in The Diary you are probably less than human. If you can read it without laughing aloud you have no sense of humour. ...

Sophie Morgan tells her true story in The Diary of a Submissive" the real-life " Fifty Shades of Grey". Sophie Morgan is an independent woman in her thirties with a successful journalism career. Intelligent witty & sarcastic she could be the girl next door. Except that Sophie is a submissive; in the bedroom she likes to relinquish her power & personal freedom to a dominant man for their mutual pleasure. In the wake of " Fifty Shades of Grey" here is a memoir that offers the real story of what it means to be a submissive. From the endorphin rush of her first spanking right through to punishments the likes of which she couldn't begin to imagine she explains in frank & explicit fashion the road she travels. But it isn't until she meets James that her boundaries are really pushed. As her relationship with him travels into darker & darker places the question becomes: where will it end? Can she reconcile her sexuality with the rest of her life & is it possible for the perfect man to also be perfectly cruel? Racy controversial but always warm fun & astoundingly honest Sophie Morgan's " The Diary of a Submissive" is a fascinating & thought provoking look at a seemingly paradoxical side to human nature & sexuality that no man or woman will be able to put down." ...

Poppets Mum Saskia has her future in hand anyway: a career in fashion and marriage to nice loaded Felix Hayes
Burlington across the road. Thing is Poppet is not entirely sure its what she really wants. Isnt there more to life than charity lunches and yoga?
