The earliest cinemas were little more than shop conversions or basic rectangular rooms. However as popularity of film-going grew in the World War I period & later with the arrival of talkies from Hollywood in 1928 there was a great surge of new building & cinemas became more complex in style. These movie palaces of the 1920s & 1930s the heyday of cinema could seat as many as 4000 people & often featured fantasy interiors styled after Egyptian temples or Gothic cathedrals.
