This short text is intended for first year undergraduates & introduces some concepts of chemical bonding in a clear descriptive & essentially non-mathematical fashion. This text will find a place alongside textbooks containing more detailed formal coverage & mathematical descriptions. This book could form the basis of a 8-12 lecture introductory course on chemmcal bonding. The book addresses aspects of atomic orbital structure & uses this to develop a discussion of the bonding in diatomic & polyatomic molecules using Lewis dot structures hybrid orbital & molecular orbital methods. The prediction of molecular shape is addresses through the VSEPR method. ...

This book deals with the design & integration of chemical processes emphasizing the conceptual issues that are fundamental to the creation of the process. Chemical process design requires the selection of a series of processing steps & their integration to form a complete manufacturing system. The text emphasizes both the design & selection of the steps as individual operations & their integration. Also the process will normally operate as part of an integrated manufacturing site consisting of a number of processes serviced by a common utility system. The design of utility systems has been dealt with in the text so that the interactions between processes & the utility system & interactions between different processes through the utility system can be exploited to maximize the performance of the site as a whole. Chemical processing should form part of a sustainable industrial activity. For chemical processing this means that processes should use raw materials as efficiently as is economic & practicable both to prevent the production of waste that can be environmentally harmful & to preserve the reserves of raw materials as much as possible. Processes should use as little energy as economic & practicable both to prevent the build-up of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere from burning fossil fuels & to preserve reserves of fossil fuels. Water must also be consumed in sustainable quantities that do not cause deterioration in the quality of the water source & the long-term quantity of the reserves. Aqueous & atmospheric emissions must not be environmentally harmful & solid waste to landfill must be avoided. Finally all aspects of chemical processing must feature good health & safety practice. It is important for the designer to understand the limitations of the methods used in chemical process design. The best way to understand the limitations is to understand the derivations of the equations used & the assumptions on which the equations are based. Where practical the derivation of the design equations has been included in the text. The book is intended to provide a practical guide to chemical process design & integration for undergraduate & postgraduate students of chemical engineering practicing process designers & chemical engineers & applied chemists working in process development. Examples have been included throughout the text. Most of these examples do not require specialist software & can be performed on spreadsheet software. Finally a number of exercises have been added at the end of each chapter to allow the reader to practice the calculation procedures. ...

Why do certain substances react together in the way that they do? What determines the shape of molecules? & how can we predict whether a particular reaction will happen at all? Such questions lie at the heart of chemistry
- the science of understanding the composition of substances their reactions & properties. While often fragmented into the strands of inorganic organic & physical chemistry a full understanding of chemistry
- & establishing answers to questions such as those above
- can only be gained by seeing the subject as a single unified whole. Chemical Structure & Reactivity: an integrated approach rises to the challenge of depicting the reality of chemistry. Offering a fresh approach to undergraduate teaching it depicts the subject as a seamless discipline showing how inorganic organic & physical concepts can be blended together to achieve the common goal of understanding chemical systems. The book adopts a two-part structure allowing complete flexibility of use: a series of core concepts covered in Part 1 leads into a suite of further topics in Part 2 from which the instructor can select to match their particular course. With a lively & engaging writing style augmented throughout by purpose-drawn illustrations & custom-developed online support Chemical Structure & Reactivity makes taking an integrated approach in the teaching of chemistry a realistic proposition for the first time. Online Resource Centre The Online Resource Centre to accompany Chemical Structure & Reactivity features the following resources for registered adopters of the book & their students: Registered adopters:
- Figures from the book in electronic format;
- Worked solutions to all end of chapter exercises
- A testbank of multiple-choice questions keyed to the book For students:
- Multimedia content linked to the book enabling students to investigate the concepts & phenomena presented in the book in a fully interactive way
