This is an enlightening & entertaining social history of how we have tried (and failed) to battle the bulge over two millennia. Today we are urged from all sides to slim down & shape up to shed a few pounds or lose life-threatening stones. The media's relentless obsession with size may be perceived as a twenty-first-century phenomenon but as award-winning historian Louise Foxcroft shows we have been struggling with what to eat when & how much ever since the Greeks & the Romans first pinched an inch. Meticulously researched surprising & sometimes shocking Calories & Corsets tells the epic story of our complicated relationship with food the fashions & fads of body shape & how cultural beliefs & social norms have changed over time. Combining research from medical journals letters articles & the dieting bestsellers we continue to devour (including one by an octogenarian Italian in the sixteenth century) Foxcroft reveals the extreme & often absurd lengths people will go to in order to achieve the perfect body from eating carbolic soap to chewing every morsel hundreds of times to a tasteless pulp. This unique & witty history exposes the myths & anxieties that drive today's multi-billion pound dieting industry
- & offers a welcome perspective on how we can be healthy & happy in our bodies.

Calum Mac Leod had lived on the northern point of Raasay since his birth in 1911. He tended the Rona lighthouse at the very tip of his little archipelago until semi-automation in 1967 reduced his responsibilities. ' So what he decided to do' says his last neighbour Donald Mac Leod 'was to build a road out of Arnish in his months off. With a road he hoped new generations of people would return to Arnish & all the north end of Raasay'. & so at the age of 56 Calum Mac Leod the last man left in northern Raasay set about single-handedly constructing the 'impossible' road. It would become a romantic quixotic venture a kind of sculpture; an obsessive work of art so perfect in every gradient culvert & supporting wall that its creation occupied almost twenty years of his life. In Calum's Road" Roger Hutchinson recounts the extraordinary story of this remarkable man's devotion to his visionary project." ...

Welcome to South London to one of the nicest streets in one of Londons vilest boroughs a determined middle-class oasis of skips & bay trees where Volvos sniff each others bumpers & men called Giles live with women called Samantha. This is a satellite-dish-free zone of tall houses standing shoulder to shoulder with big front doors five floors apiece. Come inside shut the door & smell the coffee: you could almost be in Kensington. This is where the actors writers & media types live where small children wearing smart uniforms & shoes in the shape of lightbulbs get ferried every day to schools that are not local. Some people are luckier than others; fortune smiles on some & gobs on the rest. Jo Metcalf (no. 95) smokes & spies on the smug Cunninghams down the street as they play their bile-inducing game of happy families. Why is the grass greener on the other side of the fence? But happiness is a fragile thing & hairline cracks in a perfect world can become craters of misery. Each story is full of comic insight & realistic observation of contemporary British life & focuses on the very different lives of a set of characters living in the same street. ...

Despite its name & the fact that the bulk of its operations were in the Principality Cambrian Railways (an amalgamation of a number of earlier lines) was based at Oswestry in Shropshire where its workshops were established. Its network of routes extending over 230 route miles stretched from Aberystwyth & Pwllheli on the Welsh coast through much of Central Wales to Shropshire where connections existed with both the London & North Western & Great Western railways. The Cambrian lost its independence in January 1922 being absorbed into the GWR 12 months before the main Grouping. Apart from the standard gauge network the Cambrian also constructed two narrow-gauge lines the Vale of Rheidol & the Welshpool & Llanfair. Over the years there has been much written about the Cambrian but now much additional information has come to light as documentation has been deposited with the National Archives & in local Record Offices material that has not been covered by other historians of the railway. This book presents a whole new history of the Cambrian Railways concentrating largely on the company's standard gauge lines & is illustrated with a fantastic array of over 275 photographs both colour & mono which bring the text to life. ...
