The Burden of Power is the fourth volume of Alastair Campbell's diaries & perhaps the most eagerly awaited given the ground it covers. It begins on September 11 2001 a day which immediately wrote itself into the history books & it ends on the day Campbell leaves Downing Street. In between there are two wars: first Afghanistan & then even more controversially Iraq. It was the most difficult decision of Tony Blair's premiership & almost certainly the most unpopular. Campbell describes in detail the discussions with President Bush & other world leaders as the steps to war are taken & delivers a unique account of Blair as war leader. He records the enormous political difficulties at home & the sense of crisis that engulfed the government after the suicide of weapons inspector David Kelly. & all the while Blair continues to struggle with two issues that ran throughout his time in government
- fighting for peace in Northern Ireland & trying to make peace with Gordon Brown. & Campbell continues to struggle balancing the needs of his family with one of the most pressurised roles in politics. Riveting & revelatory The Burden of Power is as raw & intimate a portrayal of political life as you are ever likely to read.

When a whole block is torn down in central Minneapolis to make way for a new housing development an unpleasant surprise is unearthed. The bodies of two girls wrapped in plastic are discovered underneath an old house. It looks like they've been down there a long time. Lucas Davenport knows exactly how long. In 1985 Davenport was a young cop just about to be promoted out of uniform despite a reputation for playing fast & loose with the rules. A superb undercover guy he was part of the massive police effort that followed the kidnapping of two girls who were never found again dead or alive. The searches turned up nothing so when the suspected kidnapper was killed in a shoot-out the case was closed. But not for Davenport. He'd gotten deep into the case & while he was convinced the suspect knew something he didn't think he was the perpetrator
- something just felt off. He argued hard about it to his bosses but nobody wanted to hear. Until now. With the bodies discovered the case is dusted off just to tie a bow around it
- but there's something wrong with the evidence. There are indications of tampering. Police tampering. & as Davenport investigates it becomes clear: It wasn't just the bodies that were buried but the truth
- & there are a lot of people with a very strong stake in that truth never being uncovered.

Located at the crossroads between China India & the nations of Southeast Asia Burma has long been a land that absorbed outside influences into its everyday life from the Buddhist religion to foodstuffs like the potato. In the process the people of the country now known as Myanmar have developed a rich complex cuisine that makes inventive use of easily available ingredients to create exciting flavour combinations. Salads are one of the best entry points into the glories of this cuisine with sparkling flavours
- crispy fried shallots a squeeze of fresh lime juice a dash of garlic oil a pinch of turmeric some crunchy roast peanuts
- balanced with a light h&. The salad tradition is flexible; Burmese cooks transform all kinds of foods into salads from chicken & roasted eggplant to spinach & tomato. Mohinga a delicious blend of rice noodles & fish broth adds up to comfort food at its best. Wherever you go in Burma you get a slightly different version because as Duguid explains each region layers its own touches into the dish. Tasty sauces chutneys & relishes
- essential elements of Burmese cuisine
- will become mainstays in your kitchen as will a chicken roasted with potatoes turmeric & lemongrass; a seafood noodle stir-fry with shrimp & mussels; Shan khaut swei an astonishing noodle dish made with pea tendrils & pork; a hearty chicken-rice soup seasoned with ginger & soy sauce; & a breathtakingly simple dessert composed of just sticky rice coconut & palm sugar. Interspersed throughout the 125 recipes are intriguing tales from the author's many trips to this fascinating but little-known l&. One such captivating essay shows how Burmese women adorn themselves with thanaka a white paste used to protect & decorate the skin.
