This new edition which is reproduced from a first printing of the book is introduced by the author Martin Edwards archivist of the Detection Club &

Includes::
a never-before-published Preface by Agatha Christie Detective Writers in England in which she discusses her fellow writers in the Detection Club. Lord Comstock is a barbarous newspaper tycoon with enemies in high places. His murder in the study of his country houseposes a dilemma for the Home Secretary. In the hours before his death Lord Comstocks visitors included the government Chief Whip an Archbishop & the Assistant Commissioner for Scotland Yard. Suspicion falls upon them all & threatens the impartiality of any police investigation. Abandoning protocol the Home Secretary invites four famous detectives to solve the case: Mrs Adela Bradley Sir John Saumarez Lord Peter Wimsey & Mr Roger Sheringham. All are different all are plausible all are on their own
- & none of them can ask a policeman... This classic whodunit adopted a completely new approach: Milward Kennedy proposed the title John Rhode plotted the murder & provided the suspects & four of their contemporaries were asked to lend their well-known detectives to the task of providing solutions to the crime. But there was to be another twist: the authors would swap detectives & use the characters in their sections of the book. Thus Gladys Mitchell & Helen Simpson swapped Mrs Bradley & Sir John Saumarez & Dorothy Sayers & Anthony Berkeley swapped Lord Peter Wimsey & Roger Sheringham enabling the authors to indulge in skilful & sly parodies of each other. The contributors to ASK A POLICEMAN are: John Rhode Helen Simpson Gladys Mitchell Anthony Berkeley Dorothy L. Sayers Milward Kennedy with Agatha Christie & Martin Edwards.

On retirement from an unusual military career Howard Leedham settled in the USA with his American wife & successfully flew executive jets until... He was recruited in 2003 by the US State Departments Airwing (which operates an international fleet of aircraft engaged in counter-terrorism & anti-narcotics operations). Despite being British the author had the unusual skills they required. Howards specific brief was to activate a fleet of anti-terrorist helicopters given to the Pakistan armed forces but which had been embargoed & never properly used. This was easier said than done. Howard had to win over opposition from inside the State Department & in particular from their Islamabad Embassy & also dispel the suspicions of the Pakistani Armed Forces. The helicopters were released & brought up to the high standard of mechanical & operational maintenance required
- no mean achievement in itself. Despite finding doors closed to senior Pakistani officers & being constantly told that the appropriate general was much too busy to see him Howard made his mark by offering to stand outside the generals toilet door & tell him about his plans! This tactic worked he had his meeting (not in the toilet) & he was given command of twenty-five Pathan soldiers to train in Special Forces tactics & helicopter skills. Next he had to win his soldiers confidence. Howard did this with great success & he was given a further 25 Pathans. They became an amazingly loyal team & the book describes in detail several very successful discreet operations; & the occasional failure or withdrawn patrol
- often because of leaked information. Howard had to do all this while under great personal threat. How could he tell who was a friend & who was a foe
- even among his own troops? His ultimate success in anti-terrorist operations can be measured by two factors: o The US State Department with Congressional & Embassy approval allocated more helicopters. o His farewell party in a desert tent for just his Pathans & his helicopter crews had over 1 500 soldiers guarding the perimeter. All this came at a personal price
- on completing his mission Howards marriage broke up & he was nearly killed by a bomb on a subsequent visit to Islamabad.
