The first book after Doris Lessings Nobel Prize takes her back to her childhood in Southern Africa & the lives both fictional & factual that her parents lead. I think my fathers rage at the trenches took me over when I was very young & has never left me. Do children feel their parents emotions? Yes we do & it is a legacy I could have done without. What is the use of it? It is as if that old war is in my own memory my own consciousness. In this extraordinary book Doris Lessing explores the lives of her parents both of them irrevocably damaged by the Great War. Her father wanted the simple life of an English farmer but shrapnel almost killed him in the trenches & thereafter he had to wear a wooden leg. Her mother Emilys great love was a doctor who drowned in the Channel & she spent the war nursing the wounded in the Royal Free Hospital. In the first half of this book Doris Lessing imagines the lives her parents might have made for themselves had there been no war at all a story that has them meeting at a village cricket match outside Colchester as children but leading separate lives. This is followed by a piercing examination of their lives as they actually came to be in the shadow of that war their move to Rhodesia a damaged couple squatting over Doriss childhood in a strange l&. Here I still am says Doris Lessing trying to get out from under that monstrous legacy trying to get free. With the publication of Alfred & Emily she has done just that. ...

Alfred Tarski is known as the founder of the rigorous study of semantics but little is known about the views he held at the time other than that at one point he calls his position ' Intuitionistic Formalism'. Alfred Tarski: Philosophy of Language & Logic sets out a detailed account of these views in particular by looking to the work of Tarski's mentors Stanislaw Lesniewski & Tadeusz Kotarbinski. Both subscribed to an account of language on which meaning was a matter of the expression of a thought through symbols governed by conventional rules. In particular Lesniewski held that they best way to express thought was in the form of a rigorously crafted deductive theory. Tarski accepted these views & made it his project to express metatheoretic thought -thought about formal systems themselves
- to intuitionistic formalist standards. He began with simple theories of the relation of logical consequence conceived of in terms of a fixed set of primitively valid rules. Tarski next turned his attention to the semantic concepts that figured in the work of Skolem & Godel as well a group known as the American Postulate Theorists. The result of his study here was his now famous method for the definition of truth by recursion on satisfaction. In light of the reading of Tarski developed in the early chapters of the book the major topics concerning Tarski's semantics are covered: the significance of the T-sentences the meaning & purpose of the famous Convention T & questions about whether or not Tarski held that each language is covered by its own peculiar concept of truth. This work done within a few years Tarski realized that the semantics he had developed could actually replace the intuitionistic formalist conception of meaning. His famous work on logical consequence is read in this light & the shift in his thinking is discussed in detail.

Alfred is the only English king ever to be called Great. It was not a title given by political supporters not the sycophantic gift of an official biographer nor a self-styled title. It was the gift of history. Justin Pollards enthralling authoritative account befits Alfred
- a soldier a scholar & statesman like no other in English history. His rule spanned troubled times. His shores were under constant threat from Viking marauders & he faced turmoil at home. Soon after he began his rule a conspiracy erupted & he was hounded out of his kingdom into solitary exile in forests & fens. But his ambition was not felled by adversity. Alone in this damp dangerous half-world of bogs & quicksand Alfred looked within & found the motivation to create a new type of nation. Drawing on the latest historical textual & archaeological research Justin Pollard radically reassesses the key moments in Alfreds life. He offers a new interpretation of what caused this most remarkable king to begin the formation of England & how it coloured the subsequent history of the Western World down to the present day.
