Legend has it that plant collector, Harry Smith brought back this appealing Clematis from China in 1924. It subsequently gained the nickname The Robbers Clematis on account of the fact that Mr Smith was robbed during his expedition. A compact, self&45;twining climber, Clematis intricata Harry Smith is loved for its pale yellow nodding flowers which are coloured violet&45;brown on the outside, with deep maroon stamens. This Old Mans Beard flowers freely from June through to September & loves to scramble up trellises, through shrubs & against obelisks.
