Whilst the 1988-89 FA Cup will always be remembered for the tragic events that unfolded at Hillsborough, for the Final itself the script couldn’t have been written any better, as Liverpool faced their arch rivals Everton in an emotionally charged & highly evocative Wembley final, in which Liverpool would eventually win but Merseyside would be united. Liverpool started brightly, & were ahead after only four minutes, when John Aldridge hit the back from within inches to the penalty spot where he had missed in the previous year’s Final, but this time there was no denying him a Cup Final goal, & it was a goal that appeared to clinch victory after 85 more minutes of enduring football in the sweltering May sunshine failed to produce another goal. But just as the ribbons were being fastened, Everton’s substitute Stuart Mc Call popped up at the back post to force extra time. The Blue’s resurgent with their late goal started brightly, but it was Liverpool’s own substitute Ian Rush who proved to the hero of the hour, as he first swivelled & fired an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net, & then after Mc Call had once again equalised he steered an unstoppable header that was as deft as decisive to make it 3-2 with the second half of extra time still remaining. Back at Wembley, Manchester United were determined to make amends for their previous year’s defeat to Southampton. But facing treble chasing Liverpool, the Merseysiders were odds on favourite to clinch the Cup. The match was a tight affair, as both teams successfully managed to cancel each other out. Liverpool v Newcastle United 1974 FA Cup Final As Bill Shankly’s rebuilt side of the 1970’s flourished in the 1972-73 Season, the 1973-74 campaign didn’t quite live up to expectation, with the F.A. Cup becoming the only realistic chance of adding silverware to the trophies won the previous year. But facing Newcastle, they played a team that had never lost a Wembley final, & the stage was set for a keenly–awaited showdown. With eight of Liverpool’s starting line-up remaining from the side that suffered heart-ache in the extra-time defeat of the 1971 final, Bill Shankly’s team were determined to make amends, & with the addition of Kevin Keegan, they started as favourites to lift the Cup. Reaching their fourth final in seven years, the Reds headed for Wembley eager for Cup success. Finishing the season in sixth, it was remarkably the Club’s lowest position for 27 years, but in Graeme Souness’ first full season in charge, the faithful Kop were not too despondent at the prospect of the FA Cup heading back to Anfield. Facing second division Sunderl&, who had upset the form books in 1973 when they toppled Don Revie’s Leeds United, Liverpool were odds on favourites to clinch the cup for a fantastic fifth time. But a testing first half lay ahead & the scoreline remained deadlocked as the half-time whistle sounded. However, the second half proved to be a completely different story, & with only two minutes played the break-through came, as Steve Mc Manaman’s cross fell to Michael Thomas who smashed the ball home with clinical aplomb, & maybe just maybe he was forgiven for that injury time goal for Arsenal in 1989 that denied the Reds of yet another league title & domestic double. One soon became two, & it was the goalscorer who turned provider. Thomas latched onto Saunders’ through ball, rounded the keeper & rolled it into the path of Ian Rush who tucked it past Norman in the Sunderland goal, for his fifth & record breaking FA Cup Final goal.
