- Elton John's tears before the game, Andy Gray's controversial goal during it, & John Bailey's over-sized spectacles afterwards! But more importantly, it was the day that Everton's 14-year search for silverware finally ended & the sight of Kevin Ratcliffe, at the age of 23, lifting the most famous trophy in domestic football was a wonderful one. Re-live the match in its entirety as Everton fully lived up to their billing as pre-match favourites at Wembley. The Hornets had their moments, but The Toffees were never going to be denied & the ' Tartan Terrors', Graeme Sharp & Andy Gray, wrote their names into Everton folklore with a goal each to bring the Cup back to Goodison for the first time since 1966. Earlier in that 1983-84 season, Howard Kendall had been on the verge of actually losing his job as Everton manager but the Board, to their eternal credit, rode the storm, confident that their man would come good. He did...and this was the day that confirmed, beyond any doubt, that Everton were, once again, a force to be reckoned with. The Toffees went on to even greater achievements after winning the FA Cup in 1984, but don't they say the first time is the sweetest? Everton 3 Rapid Vienna 1 European Cup Winners Cup Final 15th May, 1985 The Blues arrived in Rotterdam full of confidence after beating Munich, & were now tipped as hot favourites to emerge victorious against Rapid Vienna. Sharp scored first on 57 minutes & Trevor Steven added a second on 72 minutes. Rapid did manage to claw their way back into the match, but the goal proved irrelevant, as Kevin Sheedy hammered home number three straight from the restart. Rotterdam was awash in Blue, as Kevin Ratcliffe lifted Everton's first trophy in Europe & made the 84-85 season one that the blue half of Merseyside will never forget. Trailing 1-0 at half time (after a 0-0 1st leg in Munich ), Everton faced their biggest test of a memorable season against one of Germany's best, but with some inspirational words from Manager Howard Kendall & a display of dazzling football, they gave all Evertonians a night to remember. The crowd inside Goodison Park that night was vociferous in the extreme, promoting Howard Kendall to tell his players in the dressing room at half time

There was only ever going to be one winner now! & with 16 minutes remaining, Derek Temple seized on a mistake in the Wednesday defence & raced clear to hammer the ball home. How the victorious Blues celebrated at the final whistle, as the Cup headed back to Goodison for the first time since 1933.
