We call it a sewing box but it is actually not only suitable for a sewing kit but for everything you want to sort out & find an appropriate home for. It also makes, for example, a very good jewellery box. Covered with fabric on the outside, lined with black paper. Inside there are two open boxes 6.5 x 18.5 cm x 6.5 cm & 18 x 15 x 6.5 cm. These are also coated with fabric & lined with black paper & can be used to store small objects. A silk band serves to slide the lid on. Height 13 cm, width 33.5 cm, length 21 cm. After the ban on importing & producing printed cotton fabrics called " Indiennes", introduced in France in 1686, was finally lifted in 1759 by Louis XV, there was a large influx of foreign textile merchants. Christoph-Philipp Oberkampf from Wurttemberg moved to France & founded a textile factory in Jouy-en-Josas in Ile de France. The colourfully printed cotton fabrics, designed from 1783 by Jean-Baptiste Huet – one of the most famous artists of the time – quickly became popular throughout Europe under the name "toiles de jouy", & are still one of the hallmarks of country life in France in the 18th century. Our cover fabric has a motif which is inspired by the design popular in the 18th century " Four seasons".
