Bin 389 was often referred to as Baby Grange, in part because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange. First made in 1960, by the legendary Max Schubert, this is the wine that helped to forge Penfolds solid reputation with red wine drinkers combining the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the richness of Shiraz. Bin 389 also exemplifies the judicious balance of fruit & oak.

Colour: Deep dense magenta. Nose: The very first impression? Instantly Penfolds. Some barrel-ferment nuances perhaps? A formic lift, V.A., regressive oak? Maybe all listed are guilty partners! Higher notes reveal custard tart & brle, courting meaty pan-scrapings/juices. Yet beneath, a darker edge black pudding, sweetbread, asphalt. Moreover, not just an offal offering an aromatic veil of satsuma plum, fig & quince paste aromatics liberally sprinkled above.! Palate: Enticing, inviting. A taste continuum of assorted flavours & textures. A spoil of fruits meshed with a grain-like paste chaff/oats/barley/wheat germ. At once chewy & succulent, heightened by a mouth-watering acidity & overt 2015 elongated tannins. Oak barely perceivable. An interesting package whereupon nothing stands out! This wine has flavours & aromas of bright fruit with hints of prune, rhubarb, pomegranate, & cranberry. The wine underwent a natural ferment, spending five weeks on skins post ferment. Basket pressed with some pressings included, the wine was matured for 12 months on gross lees without SO2 in five year old French oak barriques. Penfolds Cellar Reserve Mataro is entirely sourced from the Penfolds historic Kalimna vineyard in the Barossa Valley. Planted in 1964, Block 25 has been an important source for many Penfolds Bin wines. The 2010 vintage conditions saw healthy vines delivering below average crops which resulted in wines with concentrated fruit characters & excellent colour depth. Matured in both seasoned & new American oak for a period of 16 months, this generous wine is a standout from this famous Penfolds block.
