A very powerful wine in both aroma & palate structure. The aroma is characterized by black cherries & ripe plums, layered with aromas of spicy toasted oak, which gives great complexity. This complex aroma is carried over on the palate & further emphasized by the silky oak & fruit tannins. These deep tannins give the wine the length & persistence to be one of the best Merlots produced by Haan Wines since its creation in 1997. To fully appreciate this wine, we recommend that it be decanted 3 to 4 hours before serving. AGEING While released with quite some readiness, there is no doubt that the Merlot Prestige will develop further with more bottle age. We expect it to show extremely well at around 8 to 10 years of age. The intense aroma of stone fruits & florals dominate this wine, but is balanced by a spicy oak aroma to produce an incredibly complex wine. This complexity is carried over onto the palate where it is enhanced by minerally acidity which gives it texture & great persistence. The stone fruit flavours of pears & apricots linger throughout the palate with a toasty oak influence apparent. This wine shows a pristine varietal character not seen in other Viognier wines. ...

After some time in the glass, clean & buttery white rum notes develop, with green leaves & sweet young spirit. Big & spicy, with cinnamon & black pepper fighting over a pool of rich toffee sauce. Darker & more savoury notes grow: oak, rich earth & barrel char. As the spice dies away, candyfloss sweetness, licorice pastilles & salted butter appear.
