The Escarpment ' Insight Series' allows individual vineyard expression from exceptional sites within the Martinborough Geographic Indication. This wine was grown on the Mc Creanor Vineyard Princess Street, Martinborough from 29 year old vines. A combination of slightly heavier soils & a single clone, 10/5 on own roots, always rewards us with this particular style; soft, ripe, pure fruit expressions in an exceedingly New World Pinot Noir. It was open topped fermented in traditional wooden cuvees, hand plunged every 12 hours, with a total vat time of 15 days. After pressing it was matured in 30% new French oak barriques for 12 months. It was fined using a minimum of egg whites to protect the flavours but aid brightness in the glass without filtering, promoting soft mouth feel & texture. It will continue to develop for up to 10 years & will always be a wonderful counterpart to any game food. ...

This is a full bodied & rich style of Pinot Gris. Barrel fermentation in seasoned barriques has provided the wine with richness & the early picked sites have provided fresh, natural acidity. Aromatics & flavours of stone fruits, honey & pears dominate with a hint of spice providing complexity. 100% Pinot Gris. All fruit was hand picked & gently whole cluster pressed in a pneumatic press. An early pick from the Barber's vineyard has provided natural acidity & freshness to the finished wine while later picks from the Keltern & Johnstone's vineyards have provided richness & aromatics. A late pick from the Barber vineyard with a proportion of noble rot has added honeyed complexity. The individual vineyard parcels were fermented separately in a mix of tanks & seasoned oak barriques. The parcels were then left on lees until November before blending & bottling in December 2010. ...

Escarpment - Pinot Noir 2012 75cl Bottle

Perfume, elegant fruit flavours, and soft ripe tannins are all hallmarks of this exceptional Pinot Noir. It will cellar gracefully for up to 10 years. Perfect weather in Martinborough during flowering in December 2008 resulted in an ideal crop. A normal warm dry summer followed creating the distinctive Escarpment style showing complexity, attractive texture and the perfect mix of black, red and green fruit flavours for which Pinot Noir is celebrated. The fruit was hand harvested, then gently handled without pumping until it was pressed. Hand plunged every 8 hours then left to macerate on skins for an average vat time of 18 days. It has been aged completely in French oak barriques, of which 30% were new, for 11 months. The Escarpment vineyard is planted on alluvial gravel
terraces at the foot of the Aorangi mountains. There, the legends tell us, the Maori navigator Kupe abandoned three canoes after discovering the new land that his wife called Aotearoa and we now know as New Zealand. Kupe's image features on our label and his pioneering journeys inspire our winemaking. Escarpment is a partnership between the Kirby and McKenna families.
