Ardbeg Galileo is a special vatting of different styles of Ardbeg laid down in 1999, all married together to give a sweet, smoky texture. The heart of this limited edition Ardbeg is spirit matured in ex-Marsala wine casks from Sicily that is combined with hallmark Ardbeg matured in first & second fill ex-Bourbon casks. The ex-Marsala casks add fruity aromas & textures to Ardbegs famed peaty, smoky house style. Bottled at 49% & non chill-filtered it is being made available on allocation to Ardbegs focus markets. The whisky, named after Galileo, the father of modern astronomy, celebrates the first ever experiment undertaken by Ardbeg Distillery (or any other distillery for that matter) when Ardbeg was invited in late 2011 by US based space research company Nano Racks LLC, based in Houston Texas, to take part in a two year experiment to test micro-organic compounds drawn from the distillerys production on Islay. This maturation experiment (the inter-action of these compounds with charred oak) between normal gravity on Earth & micro-gravity in space, is currently taking place far up in space on the International Space Station. The vials that were launched by Soyuz rocket from Baikanor in Kazakhstan in late 2011 contain a class of compounds known as terpenes, a set of chemicals which are very widespread in nature & often very aromatic & flavour active. The experiment could explain the workings of these large, complex molecules as they will remain on the International Space Station for at least two years & help uncover new truths about the change that these molecules undergo in this near zero gravity environment. It also should help Ardbeg find new chemical building blocks in their own flavour spectrum. The experiment will have applications for a variety of commercial & research products, including, one day maybe, future generations of Ardbeg. Working in close collaboration with the Ardbeg Distillery team in Scotl&, Nano Racks will closely monitor the experiment against control samples here on earth; both in Houston, Texas at the Nano Racks facility & more familiarly, in Warehouse 3 at Ardbeg Distillery on Islay! Signed by Stuart Thomson, Ardbeg's then Distillery Manager. Nose: A wonderful complex mix of rich, deep fruit treacle & toffee intricately woven with peat smoke & oily notes. At full strength, the aroma is of treacle, demerara sugar & 'old Jamaica' chocolate packed with raisins. Beneath the layers of sweetness, Christmas pudding is discovered closely followed by after dinner mints by the fireside. With water, the flavour opens up to reveal a broad spectrum of deep salty notes, peat emerges with iodine, linseed oil & creosote, shoe polish & waxed jackets are discovered followed by spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves). Sherry trifle is present throughout giving a softness throughout giving a softness & roundness to the aroma. Taste: Full-flavoured & velvety-smooth, the mouthfeel is like wrapping the palate in a soft suede-leather coat giving a warming & lightly 'furring' effect. The flavour is initially of dried fruit covered in lashings of chocolate (reminiscent of chocolate raisins), with treacle toffees & spices (including cardamom seeds). Tobacco smoke gradually builds up on the palate with hints of warm leather & candle wax, progressing to a savoury smoked food flavour characteristic of smoked venison. Finish: Long & full with the character of smoked venison, spices & barbecue sauce. ...

Limited stock. Founded in 1898 by one of Scotland's most famous whisky families. Ardmore Single Malt has a long commitment to quality. Ardmore have an unshakable belief in traditional distilling methods & insist that Ardmore Traditional Cask uses the aromatic smoke from natural, Highland peat fires to dry our malted barley. Sadly today, the high cost of this procedure has meant that now only one Highland distillery still routinely fully peats its standard malt. Ardmore is rightly proud to be that distillery. Our traditional methods also extend to the maturation. Ardmore Traditional Cask is double matured, first in the more usual oak barrels, & then in much smaller Quarter Casks, delivering a unique smoothness to our whisky. These were in common use in the 19th century, but are too costly for most distillers to use today. Finally, bottled at 46% ABV, Ardmore is only barrier rather than chill filtered thus preserving all the natural flavours. These methods, combined, create a uniquely complex & rewarding single malt whisky.

Colour: Burnished Gold Nose: At bottle strength the influence of the two styles of maturation casks compliment each other producing a full bodied smooth aroma. The maturity that shows through comes from the American barrels & the spicy creamy nose from the old style smaller casks. A touch of water allows the full complexity of the Highland Peated Malt to appear. The rich softness linked with smooth, slightly dry aroma is combined with just enough earthy peat smoke to avoid being overpowering. Palate: At bottle strength the full rich flavours burst & fill the mouth with a creamy peat tang & a touch of vanillas soft gentleness. If a touch of water is added then the flavours increase with the addition of a sweet ripe fruit start followed by the tang of peat. Finish: Full, succulent & quite long.
