This is the true story of the Battle of Trafalgar, Britain's most significant sea battle, as seen through the smoke-hazed gunports of the fighting ships. In an atmosphere of choking fumes from cannon & musket fire, amid noise so intense it was almost tangible, the crews of the British, French & Spanish ships did their best to carry out their allotted tasks. For over five hours they were in constant danger from a terrifying array of iron & lead missiles fired from enemy guns, as well as the deadly wooden splinters smashed from the ships' hulls by the cannon-balls. While the men manoeuvred the ships & kept the cannons firing, the women helped the surgeons tend the sick or helped the boys
- the 'powder monkeys'
- in the hazardous job of carrying gunpowder cartridges from the central magazine to the gun decks. Trafalgar set the seal on British naval supremacy, which became the mainspring for the growth of the British Empire, & in the short term not only prevented Napoleon from invading Britain, but also enabled Britain & its Continental allies to mount the campaign that would eventually defeat the French Emperor: without Trafalgar there would be no Waterloo.

This is the story of Trafford Park in vintage photographs, once the largest industrialised area in Britain & the workshop of Greater Manchester. The industrial zone known as Trafford Park, between the Manchester Ship Canal & the Bridgewater Canal, began life as an extensive area of parkland surrounding the stately home of the de Trafford family.

Finding themselves completely hemmed in by waterways after the establishment of the Manchester Ship Canal, the de Traffords vacated the l&, opening up the whole area for industrial development. Gradually the whole area was covered with factories & the ancillary roads & railway lines, as the advantages of the transport links impressed themselves on developers & businessmen. Trafford Park became the largest industrialised area in Great Britain, drawing in a labour force from all over the country.

Housing was built in the Park itself to meet the accommodation needs of the incoming workers & their families, & the expansion of nearby towns like Stretford owed much to the proximity of factories & jobs. After a decline in the late sixties & early seventies, Trafford Park is once again a vast centre of industry & business. Ask anyone in the Greater Manchester area about Trafford Park, & they will either have worked there themselves, or know someone who did. It features a wonderful selection of over 200 vintage photographs. It is written by two expert local historians.

This paperback book has 96 pages & measures 17.7 x 27.6 x 1.4cm
