I tattooed a number on her arm. She tattooed her name on my heart. In 1942, Lale Sokolov arrived in Auschwitz-Birkenau. He was given the job of tattooing the prisoners marked for survival
- scratching numbers into his fellow victims' arms in indelible ink to create what would become one of the most potent symbols of the Holocaust. Waiting in line to be tattooed, terrified & shaking, was a young girl. For Lale
- a dandy, a jack-the-lad, a bit of a chancer
- it was love at first sight. & he was determined not only to survive himself, but to ensure this woman, Gita, did, too. So begins one of the most life-affirming, courageous, unforgettable & human stories of the Holocaust: the love story of the tattooist of Auschwitz. Paul Days & Brian Leng are two of Sunderland AFCs most devoted followers, both historians of a club that has always ranked among the biggest in English football even if their most successful days are behind them. They have produced a unique book, one in which they show a team photograph for every year of the clubs existence since 1884. The collection is not complete because although the club was founded in 1879 as Sunderland & District Teachers by James Allan, an Edinburgh school-teacher working in the town, no photographs exist from before 1884?85. Also missing are photos from the First & Second World Wars when none were taken. But otherwise the full panoply is there, from Victorians with handlebar moustaches, to the frizzy perms of the 1980s to todays multi-millionaires. Paul Days has seen more than 1, 000 matches involving Sunderland AFC. He was the major contributing author to the clubs Official History published in 1999 & has since written many other football books. He was the first editor of their official website now safc.com. Brian Leng saw his first game at Roker Park in September 1956. He has contributed to numerous SAFC-related publications including the official matchday programme & was also co-editor of the award-winning fans? magazine, The Wearside Roar. Brian has also worked closely with the Sunderland Former Players Association since its formation & was elected as an honorary member in 2009. He is currently editor of the SFPA web-site therokerend.com. ...

Where I came from, real men didn't hug their kids aor tell them that they loved them. To do that was soft, southern, queer. Where I came from, it was just ' Man Up' & fists flying. Dean Williams was born into a tough & deprived area of Grimsby in 1972. His father was a violent, hard-drinking trawlerman who spent most of the year at sea & his shore time drinking & fighting. Obsessed with making young Dean ' Man Up', Bob beat him & locked him in a cupboard under the stairs for days on end. From the age of seven Dean was known locally as 'the spike thrower', for accidentally injurying a young tormentor with of of a bicycle. The aftermath was a wayward teenage life, expulsion from school & notoriety through football hooliganism. But there were also times when Dean's childhood captured echoes of a simpler way of life, playing out until dusk, catching newts & nicking gobstoppers. His amazing story, although touched by darkness & shocking violence, is infused with the sharpest humour. Despite close brushes with gangsters, dead-end jobs & high-maintenance girlfriends, Dean turns his life around & comes up smiling. ...

Product Description

Football isnt about winning trophies, its about the unforgettable moments that create the stories handed down through generations.

Never has that been truer than at Tottenham in 1994/95. In The Team That Dared To Do manager Gerry Francis reveals, for the first time, the diary entries he made in the months after being forced out of QPR & taking on one of the toughest jobs in English football at White Hart Lane.

With outspoken chairman Alan Sugar fighting a points deduction & FA Cup ban in the courts, Francis replaced the sacked Ossie Ardiles.

From the magic of Klinsmania & Ardiles audacious attempt to make a success of his Famous Five forward line, to some magnificent performances under Francis, it was a season that had it all.
