The Faces of World War I portrays late Edwardian Britain before the nation was plunged into war. The images tell the story of the conflict, from the events in Sarajevo in 1914 which triggered the outbreak, through the slaughter & suffering in the trenches to the final armistice & the soldiers' return. We see not just the British & Allied Troops, but the Germans whose condition so mirrored that of the men against them. They endured the same hardships
- they too lived daily with death, depended on their comrades & longed for their homes.
This photographic milestone portrays all aspects of the are at the front
- the fear, futility, humour & pathos = & the experience of those left at home.
