Scott Fitzgerald. Also featured in this volume are The Cut-Glass Bowl, May Day, The Rich Boy, Crazy Sunday, An Alcoholic Case, The Lees of Happiness, The Lost Decade & Babylon Revisited. ...

As Elizabeth II celebrates her Diamond Jubilee, Andrew Marr offers a vivid account not only of the Queen, but also of the country over which she has reigned for six decades. Turning his attention to the monarch
- & to the monarchy, chronicling the Queen's pivotal role at the centre of the state, which is largely hidden from public gaze & making a strong case for the institution itself. Thematically arranged, rather than chronologically, Marr dissects the Queen's political relationships, crucially those with her prime ministers; examing her role as Head of the Commonwealth of Nations; he looks at what the Queen actually does
- from opening hospitals to meetings with visiting heads of state & other dignitaries
- & looks at why she spends 3 hours every night reading the contents of the red boxes sent over from Downing Street. Marr also looks at the drastic changes in the media since her accession in 1952 & how the monarchy
- & the monarch
- have had to change & adapt as a result. indeed, he argues that under her watchful eye, the monarchy has been thoroughly modernized & made as for for purpose in the 21st century as it was when she came to the throne & a 'new Elizabethan age' was ushered in.

The Diary of a Nobody is so unassuming a work that even its author, George Grossmith, seemed unaware that he had produced a masterpiece. For more than a century this wonderfully comic portrayal of suburban life & values has remained in print, a source of delight to generations of readers, & a major literary influence, much imitated but never equalled. If you don't recognise yourself at some point in The Diary you are probably less than human. If you can read it without laughing aloud you have no sense of humour. ...

The Diamond Hunters

The jet was a solid eighteen-inch column, a pillar of brown mud and yellow gravel and sea water that beat against the steel plates of the hull with a hollow drumming roar. In the few seconds since the explosion the cyclone was already half-filled with a slimy shifting porridge that rushed from wall to wall with the movement of a ship. It was like some monstrous jellyfish which each second gathered weight and strength. The Van Der Byl Diamond Company, willed by its founder to his son Benedict, turns out to be a bequest of hatred. For it is couched in such terms as to offer him the instrument of destruction of his bitterest rival. Destroy Johnny is the old man's implacable message. And so, consumed with envy for his own foster-brother, Benedict sets out in ruthless pursuit of this goal
- and Johnny is plunger into a maelstrom of greed, vengeance and murder.
