There probably wasn't much to laugh about before the 1380's. Then ' The Millers Tale' from Chaucer's ' Canterbury Tales' kicked off the long & venerable tradition in which British humour is rooted. The rise & rise of sauce & smut was most likely the general reaction to Puritan intolerance. Edward Lear & Lewis Carroll popularised nonsense while the traditional Christmas Panto launched social role reversal. So enormous was the contribution of Music Hall & Variety Theatre to the heritage of British Comedy that it defies classification. British Comedy's primary component has to be the richness of the English language & the endless scope it provides for word play. On this robust foundation is a magical mix of vital components that

Then there's disrespect for the establishment (Private Eye), the absurd (The Goon Show), the manic (Bottom), everyday unconscious humour (The Office), the class system (To The Manor Born), the lovable rogue (Andy Capp), the humiliation of social ineptitude (Mr. Bean), making fun of foreigners (' Allo ' Allo), bullying & harsh sarcasm (Blackadder), parodies of stereotypes (Beyond the Fringe), & affection for eccentricity (Heath-Robinson). That's the fertile background. But the single most vital component is undoubtedly matchless comedic talent. That's what makes classic comedy classic. Contains 3 CDs

Product Description

The beautiful game as we know it today was founded at the end of the nineteenth century.

The history of football as a sport in England can be traced back to at least the eighth century, but the laws of the modern game were first standardised between 1848 & 1886.

Charles William Alcock has been described as one of the fathers of the modern game. In 1871, as Secretary of the Football Association, he founded the world’s oldest footballing competition, the FA Cup.

He set down much of the history & knowledge he had accumulated over his long career in this, one of the very first ‘manuals’ of the sport, in 1906.
