Details: With 12, 609 units, the P-47N was the most prolific of all Thunderbolts. After the Japanese attack the U.S. Air Corps required fighter aircraft with greater range, in particular their vulnerable bombers required a long-range fighter escort. The solution was further development of the P-47 fitted with the new P&W R-2800-57 twin radial engine producing 2838 hp & a greater fuel capacity by redesigning the wing. With maximum take-off weight of over 9 tons & a range in excess of 2000 km the P-47N set an absolute record for single engine fighters.
