The first ever collection of the letters of John Lennon, an international publishing event. John Lennons reaction to most emotions, from anger to joy, was to write something down. We know about his music, as one of the worlds greatest-ever song writers, creator of Help!, Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, Imagine, & dozens more. We also know a little bit about his poetry. Now, for the first time, his private letters have been collected & published in book form. Hunter Davies, author of the only authorised biography of the Beatles, has tracked down almost three hundred of Johns letters & postcards
- to relations, friends, fans to strangers, lovers & even to the laundry. He has been helped by many of Lennons relations & close friends & by private collectors all over the world. He has also been assisted by Yoko Ono, Johns widow (and owner of the Lennon copyright), who gave her blessing to the project. Davies tells the story of each letter, describes the stage in his life Lennon was at when he write it, who the recipient was, explains the contents & their context, using an unrivalled knowledge of his subject. Some of the letters are tender, informative, funny, angry & abusive, & some are simply heart-breaking. Many are illustrated with Johns own drawings, doodles & jokes. Together they form a compelling narrative, from his earliest surviving thank-you letter, written to an aunt in Liverpool in 1951 when he was ten, to the last scribble autograph given to a girl on the switchboard in New York on 8th December 1980
- the day he was shot, aged 40. The letters tell the momentous story of Johns life, revealing his private worries, fears & passions
- & illuminating as never before the intimate side of a private genius.
