A deep edge canvas is stretched over a deep box-like, wooden frame, about twice as deep as an ordinary painting canvas.

The box frame is strengthened by professional stretcher bars for greater stability. The canvas is stapled on the back, completely out of sight.

One of the advantages of a deep edge canvas is that it can be painted on the sides as well, thereby giving it a three dimensional look. The completed canvas can also be hung without need for framing. The stretched canvas is available in 100% cotton, from suppliers such as Crawford & Black. The canvases are available in student quality; these are usually double gesso primed to prevent paint from seeping through.

Deep edge canvas is a kind of art canvas that is available in squares or rectangles & in a variety of sizes, metric as well as imperial. It can be bought as singles or in boxes of two to six canvases & are also called box canvases or chunky canvases.
