Amrut has returned to one of its early successes, this is batch 2 of the highly popular Amrut Two Continents Matured in refill bourbon barrels & bottled at a higher strenth 50% this time around. Limited release of 1, 260 numbered bottles. Amrut (India) Amrut Distillery is situated in Bangalore in the state of Karnataka on the Mysore Plateau in central, southern India where production of malt whisky commenced using four stills during the early 1980s. Unpeated malted barley is sourced from the Punjab & Rajasthan regions in northern India whilst peated malted barley is shipped in from Scotl&. Amrut Indian single malt whisky is matured in oak casks in Bangalore at an altitude of over 900m above sea level where maturation is subject to a tropical climate with dry seasons & rainy seasons. Due to the high rate of evaporation of at least 12% per year it is difficult to store & age casks of Amrut malt whisky locally, therefore, in order to produce older whiskies some casks of Amrut whisky are also matured in Scotl&. The Amrut Distillery produces a range of Indian malts whiskies including peated & unpeated, some matured in bourbon & sherry casks including Amrut Intermediate Sherry, & some containing malt whisky which has matured in two continents. Tasting notes provied by Lawrence Graham, Whisky Intelligence.com & Malt Maniac Bananas, cough syrup on the nose along with a good earthiness with the addition of some buttery richness, buttered raisin buns & grapefruit rinds. Over ripe fruit & aged musical instruments also pop into the picture. Malt & bees wax. Time for some water; things have settled down with a little more on the sweet side revealing itself, all very good. The undiluted taste is much gentler but still gives them a run for their money. Some good solid vibrancy here & then some malt & fruit but still very peppery. With water it slows down & the sweetness is revealed, syrupy & very good. There’s also now some hints of heather or roses; just a tinge of some floral notes adds to the whole picture. The addition of water is very welcome; don’t be afraid to add a good splash. The finish is very BIG & very long, again lots of fruit, pepper, oak spice, MALT (almost like a sweet meal biscuit) & some good hard candies. Another excellent example from Amrut. Score: 88 points. ...
