Packing a delicious punch of zesty ripe cherry fruit, medium tannins & a touch of soft oak, this Morellino makes an excellent food companion. Many Italian favourites will be well served by it, from humble pizzas & pasta with tomato or vegetable-based sauces, to cured meats & antipasti, roast meats (especially pork, or even better, wild boar). Historically, the area of Maremma has had a chequered reputation. Indeed, just 60 years ago it was regarded as a zone almost unfit to live in. Today, however, this attractive Mediterranean coastal region is buzzing with tourists in the summer months, & over the years, Poggio Argentiera has emerged as one of Scansano's best wineries. Ruby red in the glass with a nose of red berry, black cherry & orange peel aromas, all tied together with a hint of vanillary oak. In the mouth it is fresh & tangy, with just enough complexity to interweave the fruit, tannins & oak elements. It is fresh & mouth-watering on the finish, with a pleasing hint of rusticity.
