Europe is ready to explode. Where will the explosion take place & what will the damage be? This major new book from the bestselling author & geopolitical forecaster George Friedman presents a bold & provocative thesis about the likeliest locations for the coming eruptions. George Friedman forecasted coming global trends in The Next 100 Years & The Next Decade. Now, in Flashpoints, he zooms in on Europe & examines the dry tinder of the region: culture. Walking the faultlines that have existed here for centuries, Friedman inspects all the dormant social & political fissures still smouldering just beneath the continent's surface, & identifies those likely to erupt first. The book begins with a fascinating history of the events leading up to the horrific wars that nearly tore apart Western civilisation, & shows how modern efforts to overcome Europe's geopolitical tensions
- including the formation of the European Union
- have largely failed. Homing in on half a dozen pivotal locations, George Friedman gauges what the future holds, both in terms of conflict & also opportunity. Flashpoints details how events in Europe will affect the rest of the world
- from USA to Russia, from China to Latin America
- & reveals a new yet familiar political landscape in what is at once a gripping history lesson & a terrifying forecast of the potential devastation ahead.

Contrary to popular belief, fostered in countless school classrooms the world over, Christopher Columbus did not discover that the world was round. The idea of the world as a sphere had been widely accepted in scientific, philosophical & even religious circles from as early as the fourth century bc. Bizarrely, it was not until the supposedly more rational nineteenth century that the notion that the world might actually be flat really took hold. Even more bizarrely, it persists to this day. Based on a range of original sources, Garwood's history of flat-earth beliefs
- from the Babylonians to the present day
- raises issues central to the history & philosophy of science, its relationship with religion & the making of human knowledge about the natural world. Flat Earth is the first definitive study of one of history's most notorious & persistent ideas, & evokes all the intellectual, philosophical & spiritual turmoil of the modern age. ' Highly entertaining & often hilarious an enjoyable romp through the dottier history of scientific & religious eccentricity' Sunday Times ' This entertaining history of the Flat Earth movement is full of crazy characters & fascinating details' Daily Telegraph ' Wonderful an intriguing chronicle of 150 years of self- delusion' Financial Times

Flat Squirrel

An uplifting children's story about overcoming obstacles and working as a team. The animals all have their own personal struggle to overcome. Encourages children to reserve judgement as the animals have parallels to human behaviour. In a land similar to New England, humans cut down the biggest beech tree and threaten the flying squirrels' nut supply. Duggan worries they'll starve. To find more, he crosses the busy highway and he almost gets flattened by a motorbike. He meets new friends in the forest who help him out, when they're not fighting over a carrot or potato from their vegetable patch. All Duggan wants to do is to get home. He builds devices to cross the highway but it's harder than he thought. The animals raid the commercial bakery, which churns out an endless feast of cakes
and the flour, fat, sugar combo changes everything. Gopher twins Luca and Milo power up the metal pathway and Milo falls in the dough hopper. Can Duggan get them out of there? Fatter from stuffing doughnuts, the animals don't move as fast as they used to!
