The baguette cut, a rectangular cut with rounded corners, has its origins in the table cut which was used from the 16th century onwards. However, the modern baguette cut came into its own in the world renowned designs created by the American Jeweller Harry Winston in the 1920s & 1930s. Winston famously showed his potential at the age of 12 when he saw a 2 carat emerald for sale in a pawn shop, bought it for 25 cents & sold it for $800. Influenced by the art deco movement around him at the time, he loved the strong geometric shape of baguette cut stones. Today the baguette stone has a bit of edge & a lovely vintage feel. It is also a beautiful cut for showing off the clarity & colour of your diamond, so combined with brilliant cut stones for maximum sparkle it creates a beautiful combination of effects.
