These pretty, unusual plants from Mexico grow in the same conditions as tomatoes. They are related to the Cape Gooseberry & have a sweet/tart flavour. Fruits can be eaten raw or cooked & are the main ingredient in Salsa Verde. Culture: Sow in a propagator on a windowsill or in a greenhouse at approx. 18-21°C (65-70°F) using a good quality, moist compost. Cover the seeds with 6mm (½") sieved compost. (Germination 14-28 days). Transplant the resulting seedlings when large enough to handle, into 7.5cm (3") pots & grow on in good light in the greenhouse/indoors. Plant out when the risk of frost has passed (May-Jun), into greenhouse soil, or tubs on a sunny patio. Allow 60cm (24") between plants as they will grow tall & bushy. Plants will pollinate one another prior to fruiting. Support the plants with wires or canes as growth intensifies & water well during the summer. To harvest the fruit, remove the husks & wash under warm water to remove the bitter waxy coating prior to eating or cooking. Height 1.5m (5').. Average Packet Contents 28 seeds.... .
