Virtual Pets became a hugely popular novelty in the late 90s & since that time have evolved to become a wide range of more advanced pet care programmes both online & in hand held consoles. However, there is something very appealing about the simplicity of the original key fob pet care devices. The little dot matrix screen depicts a character (chosen from 49 creatures, which include a cat, a robot & even a bumble bee) to care for by selecting food, play & cleaning options. The creature appears to have a mind of its own & will beep when it is hungry, ill or has left a steaming gift in the bottom right hand corner. Successfully nurturing the little character causes it to grow, behave itself & prosper; neglect (wilful or otherwise) can result in an untimely demise. No matter what the outcome, however, a small button on the reverse of key fob restarts the process for another try. A fascinating challenge for children, & a nostalgic interest for those who missed out first time around!
