Topographic coverage of mainland Spain at 1:50, 000 in the MTN50 (Mapa Topográfico Nacional) series from the Centro Nacional de Información Geografica, the country’s civilian survey organization. The maps have contours at 20m intervals, enhanced by relief shading, plus colouring and/or graphics to show different types of terrain, vegetation or land use. Boundaries of national parks & other protected areas are marked. In addition to all the usual information featured on topographic mapping at this scale, detailed presentation of the road & rail networks, rural tracks & paths, etc, the maps also show campsites & mountain refuges. On more recent editions some GRs, the official long-distance hiking routes, are also marked (although not as clearly as on hiking maps from other publishers). Each map covers 29.5x 18.5 km (with adjustments in the border or coastal areas). The maps have a 1-km UTM grid, plus margin ticks for latitude & longitude at 1` intervals. Map legend is in Spanish only.HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT 50K MAP: all the titles in CNIG’s 200K Provincial Road Maps series at 1:200, 000 are overprinted with the grid for the 1:50, 000 maps & can be used to see the area covered by each 50K title. TO SEE THE LIST OF TITLES IN THIS SERIES PLEASE CLICK ON THE SERIES LINK.PLEASE NOTE
- MAP TITLES: the grids shown on our website serve both the civilian & the military 1:50, 000 topographic series. Although the areas covered by maps in both series are identical (apart from some border or coastal sheets), occasionally map titles differ – only one title is shown on the grid, usually the military one. In Galicia, the Basque country & in the Catalan speaking areas the tendency now is to use local place names rather than the often better known Castilian ones. Where possible, both versions are included in our titles. Map titles listed on our website are based on information received by us at the time of publication, but sometimes maps arrive showing a completely different title! As long as the map number is as ordered, the correct map has been supplied.

What leads us to believe in monsters? What happens when we meet the brutal creatures of our nightmares? Tales of the yeti, the ` Abominable Snowman` of the Himalayas, have been recorded for centuries. This huge, ape-like, hairy creature has tantalised explorers, mountaineers & locals with curious footprints & elusive appearances. But until recently, no one has been able to identify what this mythical creature might be, or even determine if it is real. On an expedition to the remote Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan, Graham Hoyland found & filmed footprints of the mythical yeti in a part of the country that has never before been visited by Western explorers. In a lost valley near the unclimbed mountain Gangkar Punsum, Hoyland believes he was stalked by the mysterious yeti, a beast so unspeakably powerful that locals say it can kill a yak with one savage blow of its fist. As he delves into the fascinating history of this ancient legend, Hoyland hears tales of the yeti from Sherpas who have tried & failed to track it. He explores the literary hinterland behind the legend & searches for the yeti`s American cousin Bigfoot, the Loch Ness monster & her African relative Mokele-Mbembe. From the dubious, mystical pseudo-science of the Nazis in the 1930s to our current era of `post-truth` & `fake news`, Hoyland examines the age-old cultural phenomena that have shaped our collective consciousness & fuelled a belief in the existence of these monstrous creatures. ...

In the 13th century Yiddish language & culture began to spread from the Rhineland & Bavaria slowly east into Austria, Bohemia & Moravia, then to Poland & Lithuania & finally to western Russia & the Ukraine, becoming steadily less German & more Slav in the process. In its late-medieval heyday the culturally vibrant, economically successful, intellectually adventurous & largely self-ruling Yiddish society stretched from Riga on the Baltic down to Odessa on the Black Sea. In the 1650s the Chmielnicki Massacres in the Ukraine by the Cossacks killed 100, 000 Jews, forcing those that were left to spread out into the small towns (shtetls) & villages. The break-up of Pol&-Lithuania
- a safe haven for Jews in previous centuries
- in the late 18th century further disrupted Yiddish society, as did the Russian anti-Jewish pogroms from the 1880s onwards, at the very time when Yiddish was producing a rich stream of plays, poems & novels. Paul Kriwaczek describes the development, over the centuries, of Yiddish language, religion, occupations & social life, art, music & literature. The book ends by describing how the Yiddish way of life became one of the foundation stones of modern American, & therefore of world, culture.

Part dark fairy tale, part mystery, Yiza is the story of three homeless street children on the run. One evening, not long after her arrival in Germany, six-year-old Yiza is abandoned at the market where she spends her days. At a shelter for migrant children she meets two boys, Schamhan & Arian, & together they run away. Trekking through snowy forests & housing settlements, they evade police custody, subsisting on the margins of society & doing whatever it takes to survive. Both boys are protective of Yiza but are blind to the moral & emotional complexities of their actions. When Yiza falls ill they take shelter in a greenhouse & Arian spends his days begging for food & medicine, but before long they are discovered. When Yiza is illicitly taken into care & confined the novel reaches its brutal denouement as Schamhan & Arian will do anything to be reunited with her.
