Records & mysteries: a voyage in images through the most incredible & mysterious stories in nature. In World of Wonders, author Elisabeth Roman presents the natural world's wonders & records in a new, original format, beginning each story with a question (like, Whose heart beats the fastest? Does the snail really have millions of teeth?) & then describes, in detail that covers a two-page spread, over ninety world records. Young readers will learn about the natural world's exploits in different categories: height, growth, age, temperature, light, danger, weight, etc. Some other examples of topics covered: How does a squirrel manage to fly? Why do giraffes have the heaviest (in weight) heart?

Medium size cloth-backed version of a reproduction by Old Folding Maps of “ The World on Mercator’s Projection” map published by James Wyld in 1861. The map presents the world with international borders highlighted in colour. Hachures indicate main mountain ranges & the map

Includes::
plenty of place names, particularly in the coastal regions & in the already well-explored Pacific Ocean. The interior of Africa is still largely unknown. In USA the map shows individual states; in Australia the south-eastern states are already marked, but the west of the country is still called New Holl&. This reproduction was taken from what used to be called a “cloth-dissected” map, made when the map itself was cut into sections & each section then individually pasted onto an overall cloth backing for the whole map. In this version the whole map is backed onto cloth in one piece but the gaps between the sections have been reproduced in the printing to preserve the style & the feeling of the original. Each individual cloth-backed map is sold folded in a colourful case covered with a unique design marbled paper – no two cases are identical.PLEASE NOTE: this title is also available in a smaller size but with many place names difficult to read even with a magnifying glass. To see the list of all the titles in this series from Old Folding Maps please click on the series link.

Political map of the world from the Ordnance Survey, size 123.5 x 91.5 cm / 48” x 36” approx, ideal for schools, with flags & country facts, laminated surface suitable for marking, etc. The map’s Miller projection, as explained in the accompanying notes, reduces the exaggerations of the more traditional Mercator maps & the shape distortions of the now popular equal areas projections like Peter’s. Political colouring by country is supplemented by relief shading to show mountain ranges & names of main physical features are included. All place names are in their English versions. Latitude & longitude lines are drawn at 15° intervals. A panel under the map shows country flags accompanied by details of area & population. LAMINATED & ENCAPSULATED WALL MAPS:- LAMINATED wall maps have a thin layer of plastic usually applied to the printed side only. They can be written on with suitable marker pens without any damage to the map but, unless laminated on both sides, they are not damp-proof.- ENCAPSULATED wall maps are sealed between two sheets of plastic. They are more rigid & heavier than laminated maps of the same size. They are damp-proof & do not crinkle in humid conditions. Encapsulation gives the map a shiny surface, similar to being displayed behind glass.- PLEASE NOTE: many publishers & retailers often use these two terms interchangeably. Our map titles & descriptions follow the definitions provided above. ...
