William Speirs Bruce was a Scottish nationalist & naturalist who led the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition (1902-04) as well as participating in or leading many other polar expeditions from 1892 through to 1919, particularly to Spitsbergen. He is now largely forgotten compared with the `greats`, Shackleton, Scott & Amundsen. This biography returns to primary sources to provide a new & controversial view of the relationship between Bruce & the then President of the Royal Geographical Society, Sir Clements Markham, & also draws conclusions about Bruce`s personality, in particular suggesting that he was probably on the autistic spectrum. Bruce was ahead of his time in dreaming of a network of cooperating meteorological stations in the south. He handed over the Laurie Island observatory to the Argentinians. He can be considered the Father of Meteorology in the South Atlantic. He had a lasting impact, publishing his work, under great difficulties, in six scientific volumes. His endeavours in the Arctic were notable for the extensive new surveys he undertook. The British Antarctic Survey is an enduring testament to his scientific vision & has named its laboratory in the South Orkney Islands in his honour. Despite being a strong nationalist
- or perhaps because he was
- his outlook was internationalist. Bruce was never awarded the Polar Medal; this book explains why.

Here, newly edited from manuscripts held by The Wordsworth Trust, is an entirely new edition of The Prelude, the most resonant poem of the entire Romantic Era. Over the last 150 years this poetic autobiography has emerged as one of the most admired works in all of English literature & certainly as the pre-eminent long poem expressing a personal romantic spirit. It tells the story of the growth of imagination & love in the mind of one of the finest poets of the last 250 years. It recounts Wordsworth`s childhood & youth, his days at Cambridge, residence in London, walking tour of the Alps, his witnessing of the French Revolution, crisis & turmoil over the apparent failure of its revolutionary ideals, & the ultimate restoration of imaginative power. The poem is spiritual & inward, yet anchored in particulars of landscape & events of history. Marginal glosses, a unique feature of this edition, guide the reader through the design & flow of the poem. Succinct notes elucidate references & language needed for a full understanding. Also provided are a fresh critical Introduction, detailed & helpful Chronology, Bibliography, & specially commissioned color Maps. Wordsworth addressed his poem to Samuel Taylor Coleridge & read it aloud to him. Coleridge`s poetic response, To William Wordsworth, is also included. This is the first fully illustrated edition of The Prelude. More than 130 paintings, drawings, & works of art, all in full colour, illustrate its events, people, & settings in the English Lake District, Cambridge, London, Paris, the Alps, & Wales. There are works by Turner, Gainsborough, Constable, Blake, Canaletto, David, Millet, & many others. Almost all were created at or near the time that Wordsworth composed the poem, & we know he even saw a number of them personally. ...
